SUFFERING FOR DOING GOOD

Friday, 20 July 2018

1 Peter 3 : 8-22

“….Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong!” -1 Peter 3:16-17[NLT]

A Christian’s attitude and actions count a lot while living in this world. God has called us to bless others and not retaliate when we are wronged. We have to keep doing what is right so that our life will be blessed by the Lord! If the Christian lives his/her life in accordance to the principles of God’s Word,  he/she need not worry much. If we revere Christ in our hearts and keep our conscience clear, there is no cause for anyone to speak ill about us.

But if people do speak against us while we live a good life in Christ Jesus, they will be ashamed in the end. Submission to the service of our Lord and Master is not just an easy go entirely, there are times and moments of challenges, misunderstandings, false accusations and mockery. Our Lord and Master, Jesus himself passed through this corridor of suffering for righteousness’ sake and he told his disciples that they too will get the same treatment He got at the hands of His accusers (Refer Matt.5:11; Matt.10:25). In Isaiah 66:5 the Lord’s voice is clear as an encouragement to his people who are faithful to him. Listen to what the LORD says, you that fear him and obey him: "Because you are faithful to me, some of your own people hate you and will have nothing to do with you. They mock you and say, 'Let the LORD show his greatness and save you, so that we may see you rejoice.’  But they themselves will be disgraced!” The magnitude of our challenges for righteousness sake has nothing to do with the level of God’s glory that will be revealed to those who are ready to hold onto his teachings (John 17:22,24).

There is a great gain in suffering when you are doing the right thing.  Persecution and trials may come even from within the house hold of faith. Close friends, relatives can be used by the enemy to rain down false accusations, derogatory remarks and mockery on our person. It is better we receive it with gladness and joy because we are never the first neither will we be the last to face such situation before the coming of our Lord and King. No matter how painful and challenging our situation may appear for the sake of serving the Lord, we should not learn to fight back or defend ourselves but rather we should arm ourselves with the attitude of love, kindness and humility by smiling at the storms of life. No matter how heavy the storms of life may appear, they will never last forever. They are always just for a moment. In all of these we are more than conquerors when we stand our ground in the Lord to endure unto the end.

We should bear in mind that it is only those who OBEY THE LORD’s instructions that will see His mighty hand in due season, NOT THE PROUD! Listen to what the Lord has to say: The LORD Almighty says, "The day is coming when all proud and evil people will burn like straw. On that day they will burn up, and there will be nothing left of them. But for you who obey me, my saving power will rise on you like the sun and bring healing like the sun's rays. You will be as free and happy as calves let out of a stall. On the day when I act, you will overcome the wicked, and they will be like dust under your feet.” Malachi 4:1-3

Quote for the Day: "The person who bears and suffers evils with meekness and silence, is the sum of a Christian man." - John Wesley
