INCREASING FAITH THROUGH THE PROMISES OF GOD

Hebrews 11 : 1-19

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." -Hebrews 11:1

The verse above gives us key words regarding faith, “substance” and “evidence” both which are tangible and things hoped for and things not seenwhich are intangible. Similarly in Heb 11:3: “By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.”  Our God is a God who gives life to the dead and calls non-existent things into existence (Romans 4:17).  God has the ability to create- when God speaks, it is as good as done!  He spoke the worlds into existence through His words.  So when God gives us His Word over our impossible situations and we trust Him, God will watch over that word to perform it (Jeremiah 1:12).

Further in the chapter we see how the patriarchs understood the faithfulness of God to His word, and thus were able to put their faith into operation to gain a good report and acceptance from God, whereby they were able to achieve impossible things. Hebrews 11:6 says, “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”

Faith is from God.  Paul who was formerly an unbeliever, understood the abundant grace of God to be the source of his own faith; for 1 Timothy 1:13-14 says, "I was formerly a blasphemer and …..…… Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; but the grace of our Lord overflowed with the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus."  So if faith is from God, then we who believe in Him through Christ Jesus are rich in faith. It is not by our power or might………. but it is about the power of the promises of God and His faithfulness to keep those promises, “It is the Spirit who gives life, the flesh is no help. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life.” (John 6:63) Isaac, the son of promise, came to be not because of Abraham’s confessions or declarations or willingness to sacrifice, but because GOD PROMISED he would be. Our part is to believe the promise and not waiver in faith through any unbelief as it can delay its fulfilment.

We all know that our faith is most shaken when we undergo trials in life.  We also know that these are times of testing from God.  So what does testing mean?  To understand this let us look at the word TEST in through the eyes of a common man.  When you sit to write a test/exam you are doing nothing but bringing to remembrance all that you have learnt in order to apply it and also to put it in writing. Similarly, in a test sent by God, He is just trying to find out how much you have retained of the Word that you have read/heard/been taught to see how you will apply this in your current situation.  That is all it is.  So when we/others undergo trials/testing do not be disheartened or look down on those tested, but understand that it is a time we/ they have to be tested and found worthy to go something greater God has kept for us. So let us all when tested apply all that the word of God has taught us.

Just as God had become so real and precious to the men of faith; let us also likewise be absolutely sure of Him and the truthfulness of His promises.

Think On: "But having the same spirit of faith, according to what is written,

“I believed, therefore I spoke,” we also believe, therefore we also speak…”

(2 Corinthians 4:13)
