“Let your light so shine before men …” – Matthew 5:16
Light has become a vital part of our lives that we hardly think of people who are deprived of it or live without it. We don’t enjoy groping in the darkness trying to find something or find the way to some source of light. Now think also of one who is blind— that person’s world is full of darkness!
If physical light is seen to be so vital to all of us who have experienced it, how important it is for our inner soul to be lighted! Christ Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”(John 8:12). We who have Christ in us, has the light of life! Our life which was once in the darkness of sin, spiritually dead became light when He brought His light and eternal life into our lives! Those who have received the light of Christ, are now called to be:
Light in the World(vs.14)
We are now God’s chosen people! Chosen for a purpose! “He has done this for you so you can tell others how God has called you out of darkness into His great light.”(1 Peter 2:9 NLV). We are His light-bearers, light houses that are called to show the way to a lost and lonely generation— to draw them to Christ so that those groping in darkness may come to the light of life in Christ! Light exposes the true condition of a place! Similarly, a believer’s light should expose the sin in an unsaved person helping him see the need of a Saviour! Believer, Christ’s light is to be reflected through your life that they will come to know Him through you!
Light in the Home (vs.15)
Being Christ’s light in the home too is crucial. 1 John 1: 6 says, “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.” Some feel that their testimony counts only outside the home and they can behave in any manner in the comfort zone of their home. Jesus warned us in Luke 11:35 “Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.”- relating it to the eye being the lamp of the body. The eye which is the window to the world and with which we perceive things is always to be kept “good”—without darkness and full of light! One way to keep the eyes full of light is to allow God’s Word to enter in: “The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.” (Psalm 119:130). Our viewpoint/perceptions are allowed to be transformed by God’s Word which will in turn lead to our transformed lives in the home and outside! The believer becomes the lamp in the home!
Our key verse says, “Let your light so shine…!” Be a light-shiner in the world drawing the lost ones to Christ the Light of world! Be a light-shiner in the home having the light of life in you, a testimony of a transformed life! In doing so, our good works will glorify our Father in heaven showing that we are truly His children!
Quote for the Day: “We are told to let our light shine, and if it does, we won’t need to tell anybody it does. Lighthouses don’t fire cannons to call attention to their shining- they just shine.” ~D.L. Moody
