Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land. -Proverbs 25:25
We all experience the need for food and water in our daily lives- because hunger and thirst are basic physical needs as long as we are alive. There is nothing as refreshing as a drink of cold water to a parched or thirsty body. The gospel is good news to a wearied soul who still hungers and thirsts after the meaningless pursuit of trying to satisfy himself with the things of the world.
Man often forgets that humans are spiritual beings too - we have a body, soul and spirit. God gave us life with His breath: “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7) But through Adam, sin entered the world and all men are born spiritually dead- disconnected from God. That vacuum inside each person can only be filled by our Creator! But sin separates us from Him. Unless sin is dealt with, we cannot enjoy a relationship with God.
God did not leave us to grope in the darkness of sin and let us die in it hopelessly. God so loved each of us that He willingly gave His Son to die in our place, putting our sin on Him so that you and I could be freed from the penalty of sin (death) and come into a living relationship with God! “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 GNT). When we accept God’s provision of being made right with Him through Jesus Christ His Son – when we receive Him into our lives, we are “born again”- we become spiritually alive. From then on, we begin to hunger and thirst for the presence of God. That is the way God created us. On the other hand, if you don’t have a hunger for God, it’s either you are spiritually dead or else sin has caused an alienation. And hence we would feel the emptiness inside perpetually.
Are you spiritually alive or spiritually dead? Do you hunger for more of God? If you hunger for God, come to Christ Jesus! He will satisfy you. Jesus said "…whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.” (John 4:14)- it will well up within him to everlasting life. On another occasion Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and who believes in me will never be thirsty" (John 6:35).
Like cold water that refreshes a person on a summer day is the gospel of Jesus Christ! It proclaims the good news from heaven that will refresh our soul. We can find the way to God, our eternal home and also the good news from heaven that we are God’s children through the finished work of Christ on the cross. The daily fellowship with God and through His Word will feed, sustain, refresh and satisfy our souls till we reach our permanent home.
May God fill your hunger for Him today through Christ! Only God can fill an empty soul. There are many out there who hunger for the real- for they are empty and wearied with the world! They don’t know the way to find the source to satisfy their hunger and thirst. Can we guide them to Christ who can satisfy, so that their weary soul will be filled?
Prayer: Heavenly Father we ask of You to give us the living water which will flow through us always and bless others. In Jesus Christ, we pray- Amen.
