PEACE IN THE LORD

2Thessalonians 3:1-18

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. – 2 Thessalonians 3:16

Apostle Paul writes to the church at Thessalonica, giving them a few exhortations. He requests prayer for the mission team that God’s Word may go forth through them and His name be glorified. He is confident of their adherence to his instructions and prays that God would direct their hearts in His love and patient endurance.

After Paul encourages the believers to continue doing their work, not wasting time in idleness, and concludes the letter with a note on peace. It is more like a prayer that the Lord will grant them peace always! The believers in Thessalonica may have been troubled about many thingsand it was necessary for Paul to encourage them to receive God’s peace for all times. In our prevailing circumstances in the world today, we too need the Lord’s peace at all times and in every way.

Peace seems to be the most prized possession coveted for in our times. In a world embroiled in alarming events and uncertainties, there is such desperation for peace in the individual and at large. In such a context, we look to the only One and His Word that can offer peace for our troubled times. The Lord Jesus before leaving the world spoke to His disciples thus: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27). How can we have this peace in ourselves today?

• Peace with the Lord

There is no way a person can have peace at all times unless he first makes peace with his Creator. Humankind has been estranged from God because of sin and its consequences and so needs to be made right with Him for a proper relationship to be established. God made a way possible through His Son Christ Jesus to reconcile man to God. What did He do to bring us to have peacewith God? Isaiah 53:5 tells us that the punishment that brought us peace was upon Jesus, meaning that the death penalty for sin was borne by Christ when He took upon Himself our sin. 2Cor.5:21 says: God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Hence Romans 5:1 [NLT] is clear: “Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.” Peace with God can be yours today if you accept what Jesus has done on your behalf to make you right with God!

• Peace in the Lord

As long as we live in the fallen world, we will face innumerable instances in our lives that can wreck our peace. It can be physical occurrences of pain, sickness, mishaps or global events, or sometimes spiritual cases of strife amongst people, sin, disagreements, unforgiveness and so on. Whatever the circumstance, it brings anxiety, fear, unrest and disquiet within us that undermines our peace. See what Jesus told His disciples: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”(John 16:33). Peace in the Lord Jesus who overcame the world is what can sustain a believer in turmoil. When the disciples were afraid and huddled in a room, Jesus came into their midst and said: “Peace be with you!” (John 20:19,21). Thar’s what he offers you and me even this day in our troubled moments. 

Brethren, as we go through turbulent times, let us be encouraged today from God’s Word: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Phil. 4:6-7).

Prayer: LORD, keep me in Yor perfect peace! Amen
