“For there the LORD commanded the blessing – life forever.” -Psalm 133:3

The LORD’s blessing is sought after by all – but Psalm 133 traces the origin of it and establishes certain kingdom principles of receiving the same! The principles outlined here are foundational and they are to be adhered to at all times to receive the blessing of the LORD- unity which brings anointing; anointing results in blessing; blessing results in life forever. In the Bible, we can see blessing from two different perspectives.

  • During the Old Testament times, material wealth [Possessions (Livestock, Silver, Gold, Land etc.), Position (be in a place of authority), People (slaves), Posterity (Children)] was considered blessings.

  • In the New Testament the “source” of all blessing is considered blessing!! It is God who provides all blessings to us through Jesus Christ!

The key to blessing is “through Christ!” Galatians 3:14 says: “…that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” When God spoke to Abraham in Genesis 26:4 “…and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;” -the implication of Abraham’s seed wasn’t in his immediate descendant Isaac, but it looked forward to Christ Jesus- the Promised Seed in whom all the nations of the earth would be blessed! But the blessing can come to a person when he decides to put his faith in Christ and be united in Him: the blessing of eternal life we receive through Him: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Though Psalm 133 speaks of the blessing acquired through the unity of brethren, for the New Testament believer the first unity is when one unites himself with the LORD through the indwelling Holy Spirit and the Word of God. When he accepts the Word and aligns his life with the Word of God, blessing both spiritual and physical will flow into his life! See the other blessing mentioned in Ephesians 1:3: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ…” The first and foremost blessing we have is our redemption through His blood and the forgiveness of our sins (Eph.1:7). Then in Him we have obtained a great inheritance which is guaranteed through the seal of the Holy Spirit on us (Eph.1:11, 13, 14). Through Christ we have become children of God and joint heirs with Christ! (Rom.8:16, 17).

Not only are we blessed spiritually when we are in Christ but His blessing flows into every area of our lives as well. The Psalmist says “Trust in the Lord, and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:3,4). Trusting in the Lord, feeding on His faithfulness and delighting ourselves in the Lord is part of aligning ourselves and uniting with what God’s Word says. And surely His goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our life and the life for evermore will be in His dwelling (Psalm 23:6).

A life of blessing here and hereafter is in the Source of all blessing- Christ Jesus! That is where- in whom – God commands the blessing! Would you receive Him?

Think on: “From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.” John 1:16 [NLT]
