“Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.” -Luke 11:35

Living in a dark and chaotic world, it is often easy to get swayed away into the many pleasures that the world offers. And hence Jesus’ instruction from today’s Scripture is especially relevant to us, as we endeavor to live a life devoid of sin but pleasing to God.

In Vs 34 Jesus points out that, ‘The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.' What the eyes behold, have an impact on the thoughts and intentions of the heart. We have a choice as to what we allow into our minds - the eyes represent our perception!

Jesus Christ is the light that our eyes have to behold and be receptive to. “…God is light, and in him is no darkness at all (1John 1:5). Jesus Himself says in John 8:12, I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness.” When we submit ourselves to the authority of Christ, the divine light of God shines within us, dispelling all darkness. The Scriptures say, “God commanded light to shine in the dark.” Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ.(2Cor.4:6 CEV). Knowing and walking in the light of Christ keeps the darkness of the world at bay.

We need to be cautious about what we allow into our lives. 2 Corinthians 11:14 reminds us that Satan, the king of deception, ‘disguises himself as an angel of light.’ He aims to distract and blind people by gaining an entrance to their minds through their eyes, attracting them to enticing pleasures of the world. He binds man in sin through the false promises of happiness and comfort in worldliness. He distorts the perception of man with false religion and doctrines and ultimately blinds you with darkness and evil. Jesus warns us of the tactics of the enemy saying, “Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.” (Luke 11: 35). What a dismal condition it would be if the light within was darkness, where there is no goodness to be found. But God is merciful and loving and has given us a way out of darkness -the way through Christ! If you are willing to let go off the world and seek Him, God will lead you to the light. If you have swerved away from the path of light, Christ is willing to forgive and restore you if you confess your sin.

Beloved in Christ, as children of light (1Thessalonians 5:5), we need to be vigilant and constantly examine our lives to ensure that no evil desire creeps in and robs us of the light of Christ’s presence in us. “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7)

We who have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9), are called to be beacons of light directing others to Christ (Phil. 2:15).

Act on:

…let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

(Matthew 5:16)
