All the labor of man is for his mouth, And yet the soul is not satisfied. - Ecclesiastes 6:7
The writer of this devotion was truly searching in this world for the satisfaction of his soul but never found it anywhere in all the seeking. After searching for it many years, at the age of 27, he found it when Christ came and took over his life! His encounter with Christ was his first day of soul satisfaction. Ever since, his soul has been nourished and cherished in every way by the Lord Himself. Friend- if you are searching for any real meaning in life, let me assure you- you will never find it anywhere else except in JESUS CHRIST.
The book of Ecclesiastes points towards this great truth from every practical area of life. With a close reading of it, you can have a reflection of your own follies. How foolish for us to search and amass great wealth and fame in a world, which is seen now and is of no value when we pass on to eternity, which is the reality. A realization of this great truth will bring you to your senses to seek after the eternal principles. Unless and until you get a hold of it, you will never be satisfied- because God has kept eternity in our hearts. Eccl. 3:11 [NKJV]:“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts...” This desire for eternity is in the soul of every man. But many a time we try to fill this longing with things of this world—riches, fame, fleshy appetites and other worldly things. But these vain pursuits only create a deeper sense of hunger for the true source of satisfaction which would ultimately find contentment and wholeness only when the soul encounters its Maker and Sustainer - JESUS CHRIST.
So then, how do we reach this state of fulfillment? The first step towards this life of satisfaction is to understand how pitiful and wretched our position is in this world without this hope for eternal life! Matt. 5:3 says, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Once we come to the real understanding of this truth, we will search for ways to escape that wretched state of life.
What should our next response be? Mourn over our deplorable condition. Matt.5:4: “Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.” Only a humble soul would understand its miserable plight, thereby accept the free gift of salvation offered to him in Christ Jesus. As 2Cor 7:10 says “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret…” Receiving salvation in Christ is the first step for an empty soul to find satisfaction.
Now this renewed life in Christ could never be traded with any of the garbage the world has to offer us. In desiring righteous living and pursuing it in Christ will lead to contentment. As Matt.5:6:“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.”
Walking in the fulness of all the goodness that Christ has offered us, we can echo with the psalmist as written in Psalm 34:8-10
Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
Oh, fear the LORD, you His saints!
There is no want to those who fear Him.
The young lions lack and suffer hunger;
But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.
Think on: The real food for our soul’s hunger is Jesus Christ Himself. Only HE can satisfy!
