“For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One Jesus Christ.”- Romans 5:17
Apostle Paul being committed to his calling, presents the gospel truths clearly in a systematic manner like an experienced lawyer presenting his case, to the church in Rome and for all believers. Justification by faith— that is, how one is made right with God through faith in Jesus Christ— is the gist of this chapter.
Paul connects faith with salvation. Through human deeds or by obeying the Law no one can save himself or herself but only by faith in Christ (Galatians 2:16). Faith activates the grace of God that saves us; for we are saved by faith through grace. Ephesians 2:8 NLT: “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.” It establishes a vital relationship with Jesus and through the same faith God help us to cross over from death to life (John 5:24). Here in this chapter Verses 1-5 highlights the fruits of justification and then he goes on to explain that it’s foundation is the death of Jesus Christ, in the rest of the chapter.
Our inheritance as children of Adam were:
Wrath (Vs.9)—God’s wrath because of our rebellion
Sin & Death (Vs12)—sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people
Judgement & separation (Vs.18)—through one man’s offense judgment came resulting in condemnation
Disobedience (Vs.19)—through one man’s disobedience many were made sinners.
The Law (Vs.20)—Law brought in so that the offence might abound
Our inheritance as children of God through Jesus Christ
Rescued from wrath (Vs.8,9)—while we were still sinners Christ died for us; we were saved from God’s wrath through Him!
Righteousness & Eternal life (Vs.21)—Grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Reconciliation & Relationship with God (Vs.11)—We also rejoice in God through Jesus Christ through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
Obedience (Vs.19)—so also by one man’s (Jesus) obedience many be made righteous.
Grace (Vs.21)—Even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
By birth we are physical descendants of Adam’s family and inherited sin, wrath and judgment. But the inheritance we received through Jesus is forgiveness and righteousness. Jesus opened a great opportunity for all to be born into His spiritual family that begins with forgiveness and leads to eternal life! John 1:12&13: “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” What a privilege!
Dear reader, pause for a moment and think – which inheritance do you possess now?
Family of Adam or of Jesus Christ??
Prayer:
“Heavenly Father, help me to inherit the promise in Christ to reign over sin’s power, over death’s threat, over Satan’s attack and enter into glorious eternity – In Jesus Christ – Amen”
