John 1 : 1-18

“In him was life and that life was the light of men” -John 1:4

Light is a concept that runs throughout the Bible. In the very first chapter of the Bible -Genesis 1:3 it states 'Then God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light.‘ Further John 1:9 says “There was true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.” And John then testifies that “we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

God who created light did so with a purpose. When Jesus Christ came into the world, the purpose of God in creating Light was fully revealed. In 2 Cor.4:6‘For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.’ As evident in Genesis 1:3, the purpose of God concerning light is that it should shine out of darkness. In 2 Cor.4:4 it is written, that the minds of unbelievers are blinded (or made dark) by Satan, but Jesus’ gospel brings in light, which delivers them from the bondage associated with darkness and ushers in freedom associated with light.

Jesus in Matt.5:14 said that we are the light of the world. So, the purpose of God in creating light, which was to shine out of darkness, further demonstrated through Jesus Christ has to continue through every believer. As given in Romans 8:29, every believer is designed to replicate Jesus. When we share the gospel message to someone we are guiding them to the light of the Gospel.

1 John 5:1 says “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light and in Him there is no darkness.”

  • God is Light

  • Jesus is Light

  • A Believer of Jesus is Light

1 John 2:8 says, “the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining.” The process pictured through this verse is continuous. How can this happen? When we look into the property of light that comes from the Sun, we see that it needs a surface that can reflect the light. (2 Cor.3:18 Phillips Version) says, “But all of us who are Christians have no veils on our faces, but reflect like mirrors the glory of the Lord. We are transfigured by the Spirit of the Lord in ever-increasing splendour into his own image.”

The life of Jesus, when it comes into our life, dispels all darkness in us like light and changes us into a light, which can impact other lives with the life of Jesus! Colossians 1:27 “…Christ in you, the hope of Glory.” John 1:4 says “in Him was LIFE…” When you invite Jesus in your life you will have eternal LIFE! John 1:5 talks about Jesus - “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” Such is the power of Jesus!

Will you allow the light of Jesus to shine on your life by allowing Him to come into you? Will you give a place for the “hope of glory” to reside in you? If you will, then His life that gives light will start changing you and will continue the process until you are completely changed into the image of Jesus Christ. During that process you will impact other lives too.

Dear friends, Jesus came into this world for us, yet many failed to recognize it. He is the light of the world sent down into darkness to save us, heal us, comfort us, and give us eternal life. We need to accept the truth and submit ourselves to Him so we may be His children (John 1:13) and we may be witnesses of the Light!

The Promise:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,

but will have the light of life."

Jesus Christ
