In a world where varied theories are propagated, it’s so hard for any seeker to find his way to the One Truth. They are surrounded with voices that make claims like—pleasure is the key to happiness; non -existence of the self is the end to all pain; God has forgotten you, so you are your own god— are any of these the truth? Who would lead them to the truth?

Before the arrival of the Messiah we see that God was silent for 400 hundred years and His people had no idea where they were heading or what they believed was true. It’s at this juncture that God sends His messenger: The voice that will declare the truth of the arrival of the Messiah who would redeem His people from their sin. This was the only reason John the Baptist came into this world. Today God is counting on you and me to be that voice of this truth to the multitudes.

What do we learn from the life of John the Baptist?

• 
  He was the voice that always pointed to Jesus: John on seeing Jesus declares, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (Vs.29). We too as God’s voice today on earth our primary call is to point others to Jesus. One of the best examples in Scripture is the life of Andrew. We read in John 1:41 the first thing Andrew did after his encounter was to find his brother, Peter and tell him about the Messiah. Peter’s life was never the same and he was raised to be the one to lead the disciples after the ascension of Jesus. There are many Peters out there in the world, but the question here is, will we be an Andrew? Rom. 10:14 says, “But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?”  This year will you and I be that someone to point the lost to Christ?

  As a voice he recognized his position: John very clearly states that he was only a messenger with an important message(Vs.27&30). He wasn’t the message. Right from the start he took no credit for himself. He constantly lifted up THE ONE to come. Today we see men and women drawing all attention to themselves as they serve Christ, in contrast to what John says in John 3:30: “He must increase, but I must decrease.”  As his voice today, God will do great things in and through our lives. But this has nothing to do with any of us. We can do nothing unless it is given to us from heaven (John 3:27). As servants of our Heavenly Master we can never repay God for all that He has done for us. After all that we have done for him we can only say: “unprofitable servants we have only done our duty.” (Luke 17:10)

John lived a short life but a full life glorifying God. History records many a young man and woman who have lived a life glorifying God to the ends of the earth. They may have not been recognized or even heard of, yet eternity will tell their story.

God expects you and I to live selfless lives like John so that our voices carrying the gospel will be heard to the ends of the earth.
