Isaiah 40 : 1-11

“Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it. The LORD himself has promised this.” – Isaiah 40:5 [GNT]

The Book of Isaiah is replete with prophecies which were relevant not just for their time but has far-reaching impact even to this day! The Messianic prophecies are many—some of which were fulfilled and some yet to be fulfilled. Our reading today though is a word of comfort to the people in exile in the time of Isaiah- that they would be delivered, and God’s saving power would be seen by all nations, it carries with it the power of God’s salvation which will be revealed to all people of the earth.

Coming to the key verse-“the glory of the LORD will be revealed”– it is a pointer to Christ Jesus.  As Simeon prophesied of the LORD at the time of His dedication at the temple as a baby, he said: “For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory to your people Israel.”  God revealed His glory through Jesus not just to His people but as salvation for all people! See the reference John makes of Jesus in John 1:14 “…we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”  Those who understood Him beheld His glory as coming from the Father revealing God’s grace and truth! And as many as those who received Him, God gave them right to become His children! (John 1:12)

God’s glory is revealed through the light of the Gospel- The god of this age is trying to hold off the light of the gospel trying to penetrate into the minds of people. Paul speaks of this in 2 Cor.4: 3- 6 “But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord…….  For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

Christ Jesus came to reveal God to man!- to show us the heart of the Father! Vs.11 speaks to us of His tenderness as our Shepherd: “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.” The Love of the Father is revealed in the Parable of the Lost Sheep as narrated by Jesus (Luke 15) – who left the ninety-nine in order to seek and save the lost one! He has each of us – the crown of His creation- close to His heart and does not want even one of us to perish in the thorn bushes of sin. Hence His Son was sent to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory shining in the face of Jesus Christ! – to bring us back to Him! That is the good news to be proclaimed to the ends of the earth that all peoples of the earth will hear it!

Would you dear friend be drawn to Christ, the Light of the world? He can take all the darkness in you and flood your heart with His light so that the glory of the Lord will shine on you and through you! (Please listen to the song)

GOD’s Promise: “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”
