A CHRIST-CENTRED HEART

Friday, 10 July 2020 Proverbs 23:13-35

“My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.” -Proverbs 23:26

Our heart - the centre of our being (our emotions, conscience and perceptions) is the most important faculty which defines who we are! The condition of our heart can affect every area of our life. Proverbs 23:7[NKJV] says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”

The natural condition of our heart according to the Word of God is foolish and corrupt. The world’s motto is “Follow your heart” but the Word of God teaches us that it is foolish to trust in our own hearts (Prov.28:26). We tend to forget that feelings and emotions are shallow and unreliable as they can fluctuate depending upon circumstances. An untransformed heart is basically selfish and sinful. Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” Our words and actions are most often guided by our heart. The things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man as Jesus said in Matthew 15:19, “Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, and slanders.” Unless our hearts are genuinely transformed by God, they will continue to choose wrong things.

Since our hearts are so unreliable and subject to change it is essential that our hearts are tuned to depend on God. Prov.23:19 [AMP] says, “Listen, my son, and be wise, And direct your heart in the way [of the Lord].” We are responsible as God has given us a free will! His power is available to guide our hearts in the right direction. God wants our heart- desires us to give Him control of our very being. Giving our hearts to God involves surrendering our will to Him. It is about living for Him and in obedience to His Word. Matthew 15:8 says “These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” It is important that as we proclaim with our lips that we belong to Him; our hearts should belong to Him.

Ecclesiastes 10:2 says, “A wise man’s heart directs him toward the right, but the foolish man’s heart directs him toward the left.” In as much as your heart can direct you towards evil and sin, it can also be directed by love and truth to do good. The Bible exhorts us: “Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4). As you give your heart to God, allow Christ to be enthroned and walk in His way, He will put dreams in your heart that He wants to fulfil in your life; skills and abilities that He wants to use for His glory. But the only time you can feel right about following your heart is when you know your heart is fully submitted to God and intent on pleasing Him above all else!

In our hearts, we have to set apart Christ as LORD (1Peter 3:15) which brings in our salvation. Romans 10: 9 says, “…that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” When we become saved, God “… has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” (2Cor.1:22). Then as we submit to Him He does a renewal of our hearts “…by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior…” (Titus 3:4-5) Would you make the life-changing decision of submitting your heart to Jesus? If you have never trusted Christ as Saviour, accept Him by faith today!

Give your heart to Jesus and watch Him transform it so that your life will be blessed!

Think on: “…for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.”

1 Chronicles 28:9
