“A HOLY PEOPLE TO THE LORD”

Deuteronomy 7:1-26

Monday, 31 January 2022

“For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.”– Deut. 7:6

The heart of God concerning His people is revealed in today’s reading! He wanted them to be separated from all impurity and reflect His character – holiness! They had been delivered from the clutches of Pharaoh and Egypt and God was bringing them into the Promised Land. Through Moses, God speaks to them how to conduct themselves in preparation to enter the Land of Promise as He affirms His covenant to them.

Verses 1 to 6 reveal the very purpose for which God brought them out of slavery. God’s instruction to His people was to utterly destroy the pagan nations before them- neither to have any covenant with them nor intermarry-as this would turn them away from following the Lord fully as their hearts would be lured into serving other gods. God wanted His special people to be consecrated for Himself – as He reiterates in the key verse: “For you are a holy people to the LORD your God…”

God’s choice of His people was not because of any merit of theirs but because He loved them and wanted to keep the covenant He swore to their forefathers (vs.7,8). But His Covenant is conditional- if they would choose to love Him and keep His commandments, God’s love and mercy would flow to a thousand generations! But to those who hate Him, He would destroy them (Vs.9-10)

God’s love and their reciprocal obedience would result in blessing! From Vs.12 onwards, the blessing of His covenant with them is enumerated. He would multiply them; fruit of the womb and the land would be blessed; He would keep diseases far from them; their enemies would be defeated; they wouldn’t need to fear… He would make victorious! But their part of the covenant was to maintain Holiness (no graven images, don’t covet the silver and gold on them; instead burn those images and abhor them).

When we look to apply it to our lives as God’s children it says in1 Peter 2:9&10: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” We are privileged to be called God’s chosen- a people for God’s own possession!!! He has adopted us as sons through Jesus Christ according to the kindness of His will (Ephesians 1:5)! We too are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms through Christ (Eph.1:3).

In accordance to this great privilege comes the responsibility to be a “holy nation” for Him so that we would declare His excellencies to this world for His glory! God’s will for us is to be holy and consecrated for Him as mentioned in 2 Tim.1:9 [AMP]: “for He delivered us and saved us and called us with a holy calling [a calling that leads to a consecrated life—a life set apart—a life of purpose]…” When we live a holy life separated to the Lord, the world will see Christ in us and through us!

As we examine our lives today, let us see if there are any idols or disobedience that prevents God’s blessing on us His chosen one. If Spirit of God convicts, let us confess them and the blood of Christ will cleanse us. 1 John 1: 9[NLT] says, “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”

May our consecrated lives reflect God’s holiness!

To Act on: “Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” (2 Cor.7:1)
