Then he believed in the LORD; And He reckoned it to him as righteousness – Genesis 15:6
The life of Abraham has always been an encouragement to believers as it teaches us many valuable lessons of our daily walk of faith with the Lord Jesus. Abraham is called the Father of Believers and therefore his life provides several practical lessons for our faith life.
The Bible proves that every believer in Jesus Christ is connected with Abraham. We who are of faith are blessed with Abraham the believer (Gal.3:9). In Roman 4:16 it is written that “…… the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants……. but also to those who are of the faith of Abaraham, who is the father of us all.” Gal.3:7: Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are the sons of Abaraham.” Gal 3:29 “And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’sdescendants, heirs according to promise.”
In our key verse we see that Abaraham believed in God which resulted in him being declared righteous by God; similarly, we his descendants became righteous because of our faith in Jesus Christ.
By virtue of Abraham’s position as the righteous because of his faith in God’s promise, his life speaks to us certain important aspects of faith:
1. His acknowledgement and trust in the living God (his ancestors were idol worshippers)
2. His willingness to Leave - Abraham left the Permanent to embrace the Unknown
- A permanent home in Ur
- A permanent income (family business in Ur)
- A permanent community (Ur, a civilized community with high living standards)
3. His obedience to God’s instructions- Abraham was careful to obey the Lord’s specific instructions, a proof of his trust in God.
4. He endured till the fulfilment of God’s promises (Heb.6:13-15)
In all of these aspects of faith that Abraham demonstrated, he had to face a fight of faith! In our text today, Abraham was asking the Lord about the descendants the Lord had promised would be his heir as he was still childless. But the Lord reassured him by taking him out to look up into the heavens and asked him if he could count the stars—so would his descendants be!! Abraham was already advancing in years, and it definitely required great faith to believe God would do as He promised. Though the wait was long, we know that he held on, though in between, he was persuaded to comply to Sarah’s wish, which wasn’t in God’s plan. Isaac his own heir through Sarahwas born to them, when Abraham was a 100-year-old and Sarah, 90-year-old—an absolute impossibility by any standards for child-bearing! Yet God’s faithfulness in proving His promise to be true was demonstrated in the life of Abraham. Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness!
Every believer who comes to God through faith in Christ Jesus is declared by God as righteous—not by any works he/she has done but solely on the merit of Christ! How does that happen? 2 Corinthians 5:21 explains what God did through His Son for us: “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” Sinful as you and I are(representing every fallen human being), we can never be reconciled to God unless our sin is paid for!—and that’s exactly what Jesus did for each of us—He bore the punishment of our sin by His death on the cross so that you and I would be made right with a holy God!
Your life in Christ by faith will receive tests from time to time. But like Abraham, would you be willing to live an obedient life in the Lord, trusting Him? And when His promises are yet to be fulfilled, will you endure in the waiting, believing that the Lord who promised is faithful?
Think on: He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. (Romans 4:20-21)
