A Life of Power and Hope

Hebrews 2:5-18

Tuesday, 03 October 2023

“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil…” - Hebrews 2:14

Our reading today points to Christ Jesus who became a man, so He could share in our humanity and win the victory for mankind, over the consequences of the fall of the first man, Adam. The key verse points to the power and hope for every believer who can experience this truth in his/her life.

When God created Adam and Eve, He said “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” (Genesis 1:28) They were told to subdue and rule over it and this was the privilege for His own children. But they disobeyed God and they lost the glory of God and they gave that power to the devil. As a consequence, sin came into the world and alongside it, death. So the power of death was in the devil’s hand and he wields the power as he induces people to sin and to come under sin’s penalty, which is death (Rom.6:23).

Sin is the root cause of eternal separation from God and the inducer is the devil. God had to deal with this cause by sending His own Son in the likeness of man and dealt with the devil by destroying his power by which he induces men to sin. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross destroyed the power of sin and death, which Satan was holding and gave eternal life through Christ. Col 2:14 &15[NLT]: “He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.”

Satan was defeated, and Christ Jesus gives His power to those who believe in Him to live a life in abundance (John 10:10). We are freed from the fear of slavery of death. Our hope is that in a flash and twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet we will be caught up with Jesus Christ in the midair those who are alive and also those who are fallen asleep (dead in Christ).[1 Cor.15 :52; 1 Thes.4:16-17]. All those who believe in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ through faith can appropriate this victory over death in their own life.

Why is this fear of slavery of death removed?

Do you know on the other side of life after death there is our beloved Lord Jesus Christ waiting for us eagerly? He wants to present us to His Father and our Father that we are the dear ones whom He has given to Him (Hebrews 2:13). This is the reality that fills our life with enthusiasm and makes us diligent to live faithfully with His power even in our suffering and joy. Christ is waiting for those who are pure and holy which makes us eager to meet and see Him as He is (1John 3:2); this thought and preparation make us hope and to purify ourselves as He is pure. And he helps us in our suffering and testing (Heb.2:18).

Also, Jesus Christ has promised His presence to be with us always to the very end of age. (Matthew 28:20) So in steps of faith set forward, we should always walk with eagerness and expectation that we are overcomers through Christ Jesus!

Prayer: Almighty God, our Heavenly Father please enable us to live a life for You, in You and with You till we meet You face to face, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
