“With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.”- Psalm 91:16
Have you heard about package deals? Can you recall some advertisements that offer more than just one benefit from buying their goods or services? For example, people who sell detergent soap will tell you of all the benefits of the soap – that it cleans well, smells good, saves you money, effort, makes you confident to go out every day wearing clothes that are clean, bright and smells good. They are selling you more than just soap, but offering you a package deal – less cost, less work, better results and emotional well-being.
This world tries to woo us with many dreams and fancy thoughts of improving ourselves, but these are only empty words that do not carry real meaning and many a time they are misleading, not delivering the promises that they make.
The word of God on the other hand is timeless and true. Today’s devotion, Psalm 91, is a testimony of a person who has experienced God’s grace and protection first hand and is now passing on that first-hand knowledge to someone else who needs to understand the benefits of staying in a close relationship with God.
If you will notice the whole Psalm is spoken by one person, addressing another, expressing his confidence in a God who has been his refuge, his shelter, a God in whom he trusts. He recounts the various ways in which God has sheltered him in times of trouble and offers the counsel “if you make the LORD your refuge, no harm will befall you, no disaster will strike your tent.”
The writer of the Psalm is expressing his wholehearted confirmation that his God is one who faithful, meaning, you can trust him, he will always be there for you, and he will never disappoint you. His promises are true.
In response to this confession of the psalmist’s faith, God responds in verses 14 to 16 giving 7 assurances. The number seven is significant in the Bible standing for completion or perfection. For example, God created the heavens and the earth and every living creature in 6 days and having completed all his work he rested on the 7th day.
In these last 3 verses of Psalm 91 God gives us these seven promises.
1. I will rescue him
2. I will protect him
3. I answer him
4. I will be with him in trouble
5. I will deliver him and honor him
6. With long life will I satisfy him
7. And show him my salvation
One thing to note, is that the first 3 promises are conditional, denoted by the words—“because”, “for”,”and.” Although the promises are open to all there are certain conditions under which these promises are applicable.
• The first promise is “BECAUSE he loves me, I will rescue him”
• The second one is “I will protect him FOR he acknowledges my name”
• The third promise is “He will call upon me AND I will answer him”
These promises become operational when the conditions are met. When we love God, acknowledge his name and call upon him we are in a relationship with our Lord and we start experiencing hismighty protection and his mighty hand working for us. Then the last 4 promises are added on: we experience the presence of God with us in times of trouble, there is deliverance, honor, long life and the crown of salvation that will be given to us. Hallelujah!!
This is truly the ultimate package deal that the Lord is giving those who seek him and put all their hope and trust in him.
Prayer: Our heavenly Father, we come to You today and declare that You are the God in whom we trust. Create in us a deep desire to know You and live in a loving and close relationship with You every day. In Jesus name, amen.
