Nehemiah 10:1-39

…….They solemnly promised to carefully follow all the commands, regulations, and decrees of the LORD our Lord: – Nehemiah 10:29 NLT
It is interesting to see in the Book of Nehemiah how Nehemiah and Ezra worked hand in hand to bring about a restoration of God’s people and the city when they returned from exile. Nehemiah motivated the people to rebuild the ruined walls of Jerusalem in 52 days while Ezra in his priestly role, read the Book of the Law, turning their focus to the worship of God.
In chapter 8 of Nehemiah, we see that as the Law was read, the people became convicted (8:9) and that led to a true repentance as seen in chapter 9. And then they decided to make an agreement in writing as they rededicated themselves to God in covenant which we read in our text today. They gave themselves to follow the Law of Lord and carefully obey all His commands (10:29).
Many of the pledges they made as mentioned in our reading, have to do with worship and the house of the Lord- honoring sabbath, offerings, tithes, contributions relating to the services/duties in the house of the Lord. The chapter ends with the statement: “We will not neglect the house of our God.” (v.39). When deeply convicted of their failed conduct towards God, worship and works related to the house of God, the people made decisive steps to rectify their actions. That’s the renewal of commitment we see here.
There are 2 takeaways for us from our text today:
• A Renewal in our relationship and worship with the Lord
In the business of our daily life in this fast-paced world, we can get so caught up in so many things that distract us from giving our priorities to God. That brings in a slack in the time we spend with the Lord in prayer and meditation of the Word. There are those whose work schedules clash with regular worship time and soon a disconnect comes. Here is when we slowly drift away and get entangled in other preoccupations that make us grow cold in our relationship with the Lord and adherence to His Word.
In the message to the 7 Churches in Revelation, Jesus spoke to the church at Sardis: “I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die…” (Rev.3:1-2). They were go back to what they heard and believed first and repent… it was a wakeup call for them. Here then is the call for those who have strayed away from God’s Word and His way. Listening and following God’s unchanging Word in a constantly changing world and our affections constantly on Him will keep us from going astray.
• Commitment to diligent service in the Lord
Our service to the Lord will follow when our relationship with the Lord is on track. Jesus said: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). As we continue to abide in Christ, being nurtured in Him, good fruit will begin to show up in our lives. As the people of God decided not to neglect their responsibilities in maintaining the service of the house of the Lord, we too have as members of the body of Christ need to be constantly aware of our responsibilities in the “body” the Church. Paul reminded the believers in Rom 12:11: “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” It is good to remind ourselves not to be negligent in our service to the Lord and His work.
Let’s give ourselves to a renewal of our commitment to the Lord and His work!
To Act on: Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. (1 Thes.5:14 NLT)
