A WALK OF FAITH

“Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” Matthew 9:29

There are three expressions of faith seen in our reading today. On faith, Hebrews 11: 6 says, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” The first expression of faith is to believe Him and then follows the actions born out of a trust that diligently seeks Him. The one who does so will surely be rewarded.

Taking a look at the 3 instances of seeking Jesus- all related to healing, we see faith in action in all the people involved. See how each of them responded:

• A Faith that Pleaded (Vs.18-19;23-25): The ruler had faith that Jesus could raise his daughter from death. Therefore, he pleaded with Jesus to come home and lay His hands on her. We see a similar faith expressed by the Syro-Phoenician woman (Matt.15:21-28) when she implored, begged, urged Jesus to heal her daughter- Jesus commended her faith as “great.” Sometimes, faith expresses itself in its urgency for God to intervene when there is no other way.

• A Faith that Guided (Vs.20-22): The woman with the issue of blood for 12 years had an urgency to reach Jesus who was moving with the crowd. Being a woman, she did not want to be noticed- she had to act quickly to touch the hem of His garment. Hence it was her faith that guided her to the target. Her faith was instantly rewarded by Jesus: “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.”

• A Faith that Pursued (Vs.27-29): The two blind men must have heard of Jesus’ miracles and followed him till He came to the house- their faith in Him made them pursue Jesus until they received their miracle! Jesus confirmed their faith by asking them if they believed He could do it. They answered: “Yes, Lord”- they acknowledged Him as Lord- another expression of their faith. They received their sight!

We’ve examined the different actions that came forth from faith. But a person who professes to have faith must first have faith in the living God and what He has spoken in His Word- the Bible. The Bible talks about how to get right with God -through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and that involves faith! Romans 1:17 [AMP] says, “For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed, both springing from faith and leading to faith [disclosed in a way that awakens more faith]. As it is written and forever remains written, “The just and upright shall live by faith.” Faith in God and in His Son who gives eternal life to those who put their faith in Him! What more- He helps us live a life of faith in the temporal world we live in, looking to the eternal one where we will live with Him forever!

Friend, where have you placed your faith?- in yourself, in others, in the temporary things that disappear with time? Well, it’s time to put your faith in the eternal living God. Or have you not exercised your faithin the way it should be, in the present circumstances that you are in? - maybe you need the faith that pleads/ guides/pursues! Take that step of faith and see how it will be rewarded as we saw in the lives of those people we read about. May faith in Christ and what He can do, be your guiding line always!
