“For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.” Prov. 2:10
Proverbs is all about seeking knowledge, wisdom and understanding as the very first chapter and verse 7 emphasize: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge…” and Prov.9:10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Wisdom outside God’s Word is often meagre and amounts to very little and most often the “Worldly wise-man” (as seen in The Pilgrim’s Progress of John Bunyan) steers the Christian off the right course!
The chapter while outlining the benefits of wisdom, also point to the wrong, evil paths the foolish are led if they fail to heed to godly wisdom and discretion. The path of the wicked is filled with darkness, crooked and devious means. But if you allow the Lord’s wisdom to enter the heart, understanding and discretion will protect you from such twisted people.
Our key verse speaks of wisdom that should enter our heart and how knowledge is to be pleasant to the soul. Why should wisdom enter the HEART? See what Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” We are prone to do what our heart desires; it’s the source of our life! Our soul consists of our mind, will and emotions— if God’s knowledge doesn’t direct it, it can lead to many distresses in our lives.
When we speak of seeking wisdom, we have to seek its source—“It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.” (1Corinthians 1:30) Christ Jesus is our wisdom from God and primarily we have to be wise in gaining:
· Our righteousness- our right standing with God
· Our holiness- making us holy according to God’s standards
· Our redemption- paying our ransom for the penalty of our sin
All three have been accomplished on our behalf by Christ Jesus, making us acceptable before God! Accepting Christ into our hearts is the first step of our gaining wisdom! Now Colossians 2:3 speaks of Christ, “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” If we are centered on Christ and His Word all our lives, we will stay on course and on the right track.
Today many are trying to be enlightened through the New Age theories, trying to gain “nirvana” (the idyllic state) through meditation, yoga, art of living— the list goes on… whereby the simple principles laid out in God’s Word are not sought after. They fail to realize that in Christ, the Embodiment of all Wisdom, they can live happily and purposefully in this world, looking for the eternal one to come.
Would you rather seek Christ and His Wisdom so that His Spirit who indwells you will guide you in the way you should go? His discretion will protect you from making wrong choices/decisions in life. 2 Peter 1: 2&3 says, “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,”. Brethren, CHRIST- the wisdom of God is our sufficiency in all things! Follow Him!
Think on: “For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6)
