Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped. – Numbers 9:17
During their wilderness sojourn, the people of God were given clear instructions by the Lord through His servant Moses how to conduct themselves. Remember that they were a multitude as they were moving towards the Promised Land. Hence, they needed a visible sign by which they were to be directed to keep the right as they journeyed.
We read in Exodus 13:21: By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. The cloud became the visible presence of the Lord to guide them. In today’s text we see the cloud came to rest above the tabernacle when it was set up in the desert. The cloud’s movement decided the movement of the Israelites. The length of time they would camp in a particular place or move, was decided by the Lord as He led them through their journey.
Let’s look at the emphasis in the portion of the text
• At the LORD’s command they encamped, and at the LORD’s command they set out
• They obeyed the LORD’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses
Obedience to the Lord’s instructions was paramount for the wellbeing of His people. When the cloud moved, it was as if the Lord told them to move--even if it was just two days after they had camped somewhere; if they were asked to move on after a month or a year (v.22) they followed the order of the Lord. It proved their faith in the One who called them and promised to lead them to the Promised Land.
As God’s children, born again by God’s Spirit and living in the world, there are two primary ways we receive guidance from God in our sojourn on the earth: i) the Spirit of God ii) the Word of God.
The Holy Spirit indwells every believer and is the source of constant guidance for him/her provided he/she is sensitive to the Spirit. Romans 8:14 says: “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” While speaking to His disciples on the Spirit of God being sent after He leaves the earth, Jesus said: But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit makes known to us what He receives from the Lord (John 16:15). We receive the mind of Christ when we are yielded to the Holy Spirit so that we are able to discern that which is from the Lord. It is not so with those who don’t have the Spirit of God in them: The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit (1Cor.2:14)
Secondly, the Word of God is the revealed will of God for our constant guidance today. 2Tim.3:16-17 says: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. The Psalmist understood about keeping his way in God’s Word that he may not go the wrong way— Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.(Ps.119:105).
As we understand that God’s guidance is very important in our day to day lives, may we align our lives to His Spirit and His Word that work in unison to constantly guide us! When in faith, we obey His instructions, we can know that we are on the right track.
Think on it: Walking by faith means taking steps in the direction God has indicated, trusting that He will be faithful to guide and provide.- David Jeremiah
