Psalms 127 & 128

“Behold, for thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD.” -Psalm 128:4
The Scripture always put forth conditions for blessings from God. In these two Psalms, the Psalmist exposes the vanity of all human endeavors without relying on God and continues to “the blessings” of those who fear the Lord and walk in His ways.
In the Garden of Eden when God created the first institution – the family of Adam and Eve, God wanted them to enjoy all the physical and spiritual blessings that God had provided for them. Throughout the history of mankind we see people forgetting this truth and trying to materialize their dreams by their own efforts in their entire lifetime. This maybe because life gets busy— they are too distracted to pay attention to the Word of God. By the time they realize that worldly possessions cannot give them fulfillment in life, usually it is too late for a reversal. Many others who try on their own, miserably fail on the way itself. These Psalms points to the eternal truth that unless we involve God Almighty there is no guarantee that our home will be built the way it should be!
Through the metaphor of ‘The Wise Builder’, Jesus taught us how to build our homes– “Everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them may be compared to a wise man who builds his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock” (Matthew 7:24-25). Those who hear the words of Jesus and act accordingly will have their homes blessed by God.
As in the Psalm 128, a godly marriage is a spiritual blessing. There will be happiness and blessings from God. Those who revere the LORD and trust Him can say like the Psalmist: “You will show me the path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy and brings me pleasure forever.” (Psalm 16:11 GNT). The family formed with the blessings of God will be harmonious and it will be unified and safe all the time. And it will prosper from time to time—they will love each other; grow in trust and faithfulness; acceptance and mutual understanding among themselves.
They will stand firm like Mount Zion on the face of any adversity since they depend on God for His guidance and help. The God-fearing will have the blessed married life with children like olive trees who are good and fruitful- with fellowship all the time among them, the wife and husband, supporting each other. “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.” (Prov.18:22). Such a family will see the blessings of God for a whole life time.
Dear reader, if your family life is not sweet as the one described here the only way to transform it is to build it on the principles of God’s Word. First you need to sincerely believe and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Building your life and your family on Christ Jesus is the key! Then the changes in you will definitely influence your family and they too will be saved- It’s a promise of the Word of God.
A Promise: "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you and your family will be saved." (Act 16:31)
