Blessings upon our Children!

Proverbs 20:1-30

“The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him.” -Proverbs 20:7

It is the desire of every parent that their children be blessed. We try hard to store up a huge inheritance/ earthly wealth as blessings. But there is a blessing God has promised beyond that. How can you ensure that your children are blessed in their lives? Do you know and realize that as a parent you are the reason for their blessing? The future of your children, the blessing due to them will depend on how you live today. The greatest influence you can have as a parent on your children is to live rightly. The Word of God teaches us that when we lead just and righteous lives our descendants will be blessed by the Lord. God shows His favor on the children of godly men.

A man who fears the Lord and walks in His way will not just talk the talk but will walk the talk. He lives by faith in Christ, keeping all the commandments. To such, God will send blessing and favor on his descendants. Psalm 128:4 says: “Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD.”

Let’s lay hold of the promise of this proverb with a wonderful blessing.

To receive a promise, there is a condition to fulfil. Today’s typical carnal Christian, who talks and acts one way at Church but lives another way during the week at home or in the world, can’t have this promise. It will not work for him. This promise is for the godly man, who chooses to do what is right in the sight of God, who seeks the Lord with His whole heart and walks in His Word every day. A just man who walks with integrity is a man with a clean conscience, who tries to lead a life based on God’s Word, blameless before God and men. When he does wrong, he confesses his sins and is quick to make amends. He sets his mind on things above, crucifies his sinful lusts with Christ, trembles at the Word of God and walks in humility. He claims no self-righteousness; has no high opinion of himself. He mingles with men from all walks of life-high or low, to love and serve in any way he can. Knowing he is a sinner saved by grace, he is quick to forgive others. He examines his heart from time to time and rejects all bitterness or pride.

There is God’s promise of reward and blessing on the children of godly men. But if those children or grandchildren sin, they themselves will bear the punishment of their iniquity; yet the Lord will be merciful if they repent and turn back. It is also important that they be covered with prayer in their whole lifetime. If those children also live a righteous life, shown by the example of their godly parents, the Lord will guide their lives as He did for their parents and bless them too. Psalm 25:12&13 says, “Who is the man that fears the Lord? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses. He himself shall dwell in prosperity, And his descendants shall inherit the earth.”

Parents! Do you love your children? Then get hold of the priority of this proverb. Live humbly and walk justly before God, and He will bless your children! If there is sin in your life, confess, repent and let the blood of Christ cleanse you from all sin (1 John 1:9). Search your heart and get rid of anything in it that does not match up with standards of God’s word and decide to lead your lives in integrity based on the Word of God. Set an example! This is the one true way to ensure blessings from God on your children and descendants!

A PROMISE: “…Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, Who delights greatly in His commandments. His descendants will be mighty on earth; The generation of the upright will be blessed. “ (Psalm 112:1,2)
