“Not so, with My servant Moses, He is faithful in all My household.” -Numbers 12:7
The key verse today is God’s wonderful testimony about Moses! It further points us to a “better” faithful servant – Jesus Christ, as the writer of Hebrews compares the life of Moses to Jesus (Hebrews 3:1-6). However, we are also reminded about God’s purpose for our lives—to be a faithful servant in the house of God!
Faithfulness is a divine attribute and also to be the mark of a believer in Jesus Christ! Let us look at the Scriptures that speak of God’s faithfulness and Jesus’ faithfulness— Deut.7:9 says, “Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God…” Hebrews 3:2 says, “He (Jesus) was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.” God is faithful, Jesus is faithful, and every believer is instructed to be faithful— Rev.2:10: “…be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”
The Greek word pistos, for ‘faithful’ has the following meanings: worthy to be believed; true/just/trustworthy/observant of and steadfast to one’s trust, word or promises. Interestingly, this Greek word is interchangeably used for a believer of Jesus Christ in passages like 1Timothy 6:2; 2 Corinthians 6:15. This implies that every believer is intended to be a faithful servant of God!
Let us understand what a faithful servant of God is expected to do:
· Serve the Word
Matt.24:45: “Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them food at the proper time?” For the believer, the food to be served is God’s Word! In Luke 9: 13 Jesus said, “You give them something to eat.” So every believer is like a servant responsible to give food (the Word) at the right time to the household of God. Lamentations 2:19 is an instruction to pray for the “for the lives of your children, who faint from hunger at every street corner.” Our children need the spiritual food of God’s Word!
1Cor.4:1&2: “Let a man consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.” Be faithful in the mysteries of God – which is available in God’s word and be ready in every season with the Word to minister to those who hunger for it!
· Multiply the Talents
In the Parable of the Talents in Matt. 25: 21 & 23: ‘His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things…”
Whether it be one or many, whatever talent/s the Lord has given you, has to be put to use and be multiplied! In the parable in Mattew25, the Master is very keen to see the increase of each servant of the talent entrusted to them! Have you been faithful with the “talents” given to you?
· Be faithful even in the least
Luke 16:10&11: “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much…..Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?” The principle is— being faithful in the little entrusted to you so that you can be given charge over much. A servant of God needs to show faithfulness not just with God’s work but the job he does in the workplace. Do your work faithfully!!
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever! (Hebrews 13:8). So His plans for each of us is the same, even now! We are called to be faithful in the little and the big- whatever He has entrusted in our care!
To Note: But be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. (1 Samuel 12:24)
