CHOOSE TO FOLLOW CHRIST?

“If any of you wants to be my follower….” - Luke 9:23
It is interesting to note that our text for meditation today, is sandwiched between two of Jesus’ disclosure of His death and resurrection to His disciples (vs 22& 44). In the days between this shared truth, He imparted some very important lessons that needed to be followed by His disciples then and even now, until His return.
Here are some indicators in Jesus’ lessons to check if you are a disciple of Christ:
➢ Lesson 1: Whom do you belong to? (Vs 23-26) These verses clearly state how a disciple ought to be. If we truly choose to follow a leader, our entire life will
• Revovle around the leader – daily follow him
• Reflect the impact of the leader – lose their life for him
• Resolute to follow the leader and his words – unashamed of him
Do people see this kind of passion for Jesus in your life?
➢ Lesson 2 – Who do you listen to? (Vs 28-26) The disciples had a glorious experience on the Mount of Transfiguration such that they wanted to remain in that glory realm. But that was not God’s intention. His command was for the disciples to have a heart to listen to His Son –meaning, hear the One far more greater than Elijah and Moses. And as Heb.1:3 says, “ in the past God spoke through the prophets but in these last days He has spoken to us through His Son” - who is speaking the very words of God. (John 8:28)
So
• Why must we listen to Him?—Jesus is the FINAL STATEMENT !
• How do we listen to Him?—by becoming a habitual listener; He is your daily bread.
Isaiah 50:4 says, “He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.” Are you willing to listen?
➢ Lesson 3: How is your faith? (Vs 37-43) Jesus here address the faith of the father and the disciples. Both had their share of unbelief—one group who couldn’t deliver the boy and the father who couldn’t believe that Jesus could save his child as His disciples had let him down. How often we have been let down by the faith of others, or our own unbelief has led us to doubt the ONE who is worthy of all our trust.
Heb 3:12 says “See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God”. Let not this be our state rather, let our cry be like the apostles in Luke 17:5, “Lord increase our faith.”
➢ Lesson 4: Are you a servant leader? (Vs 46-48) Fighting for prominence and position is not a new phenomenon. It has been there from time immemorial, and so we see this played out among the disciples. Little did they know that the rules of heaven were directly opposite to the pattern of this world. How often do we forget this principle and strive to prove ourselves and end up being bitter and angry! Let’s not forget that we are called to serve and not be served just as our leader our Lord Jesus Christ did. Let not the world define your success but let the Cross direct your way!
Jesus knew that his life on earth would soon end. This did not stop him from preparing His disciples to be the kind of people who would turn the world around. He is still looking for disciples who are willing to give their all for and to Him!
Are you ready to follow Him?
Don’t Forget: Jesus says, "I want you to follow me so fully, so intensely, so enduringly that all other attachments in your life look weak by comparison" ~Timothy Keller
