”...so he set the royal crown upon her head and made her queen….” -Esther 2:17
The only book in the Bible where the name “GOD” isn’t mentioned, we see the invisible hand of the Grand Weaver, weaving a beautiful story. The amazing work helps us see this chosen nation here and now because of the mighty hand that worked in this wonderful book.
It all began when the incumbent queen rejected the King’s request, which led to a nation-wide search for beautiful girls in the selection of the next queen. When all this was happening, no one really knew that God was orchestrating His good plan for the protection and preservation of His people, which needed a change in leadership, so that lives would be saved.
Let’s see the steps that led to the crowning moment:
The Favour of God: God chose a beautiful, orphan girl to rescue a whole group of people from annihilation. From the moment Esther was chosen, we see scripture make it clear that she found favour – first with Hegai, who had charge of the Harem (v.9), she then found favour with everyone who saw her (v.15), and finally the King’s favour (v.17). Here is a clear truth: if we want to make a difference in this world, in any sphere of life, all we need is the favour of God.
We don’t go looking to men to do things for us, but we bend our knees before God and remain obedient to His word to work things for us. Esther had no one to recommend her or speak on her behalf, but God was working out that good plan he had even before the foundation of the earth. God does the same for us!
This is also true in our spiritual lives. God showered his favour on us even when we were still sinners. He need not have chosen us, yet out of His goodness, He extended His mercy and welcomed us into His Kingdom.
So let’s hold on to the promise in Psalm 5:12 “For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous; With favour You will surround him as with a shield."
Sanctification: Between the favour and the crown, there is a ‘process of sanctification.’ In v.12 we read that Esther had go through a whole year of beauty treatment before she was found worthy to appear before the King. Sanctification is a similar beauty treatment – the only difference is that the beauty is worked on in the inside of our hearts. It is a hard process as much of our old self needs to be replaced with a brand-new look. Everything about us, our walk, talk, our reaction and our responses need to reflect the royalty that we are being shaped to become. Sanctification isn’t one-day process, it’s a lifelong work until we come into the heavenly Kingdom.
• Who is the one who sanctifies us? The Holy Spirit (1Peter 1:2)
• How does He sanctify us? By His Word (John 17:17)
• Why is this process important? To be found blameless at the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ (1Thes.5:23)
In the process, we will see our hearts become so tuned to the Spirit that we would only want to do what the Holy Spirit tells us, just as Esther wanted nothing other than what her caretaker suggested, before her presentation to the king. (V.15)
Crowned for a Purpose: The Bible records that Esther was made queen instead of Vashthi: this stands true to the word we read in Psalm 75:6-7: “For exaltation comes neither from the east Norfrom the west nor from the south. But God is the Judge: He puts down one, And exalts another.” Though the way of the king was evil, God used this mean action of man to fulfil a greater purpose. This gives us the deep assurance and confidence as written in Roman 8:28 that “all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose.”
So, rest in the Lord when you don’t see things going your way. God’s plan for your life can never be defeated by anyone on this earth.
