Hebrews 7: 1 - 28

Therefore He is also able to save forever those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. -Hebrews 7:25
The letter to the Hebrews indicates the original recipients were a group of Jewish Christians who had endured severe persecution and public insult (Heb.10:32-36) and now they were considering giving up their Christian faith to return to Judaism. For this reason the author urged them not to throw away the confidence of their faith but to endure and stand fast. If they hold on to their faith and keep on doing God’s will they are assured of their salvation at Christ’s coming.
These Hebrew believers were looking to see how advantageous would be their Jewish heritage with their sacrificial system, feasts, patriarchs over the simple faith in Jesus Christ for which they were suffering. The temptation to go back was so strong that the author emphasizes to them the superiority of Jesus. In order to encourage them, the author calls their attention to Christ who is presented as better than any Old Testament personality or system of worship. Jesus is better than angels, better than Moses, Joshua, Prophets and Priests. He mediates a better covenant, He offers better promises, His was a better sacrifice, His blood was better than the blood of bulls and sheep, He gives better hope, He offers a better country and a better possession. The unique qualities of Jesus Christ is summed up in Heb.7:26: “For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens.” And He is ever interceding for us before Father God.
Later in chapter 11, the writer of Hebrews points to the faith heroes who stood their ground in trusting God to see their promises fulfilled and others who didn’t see it fulfilled in their lifetime but looked forward to a better life in eternity. Thus he spurs them on in Heb.12:1: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Keep running with perseverance! Corrie Ten Boom wrote after enduring a Nazi concentration camp:
When you look backward, you see Jesus on the cross.
When you look upward, you see Jesus at the right hand of God, interceding for you.
When you look forward, you will see Jesus coming again for His Bride.
What an encouragement for them that are suffering for the sake of Christ
After presenting Jesus as the infallible “better” choice than any of the Old Testament faith heroes and systems the writer without doubt states in Heb.7:25 ““Therefore, He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for Him.” The book Hebrews today appeals to all believers who have come to faith trusting in His substitutionary sacrifice on the cross of Calvary. In those daysas an alternative to their strong faith in Jesus Christ, the Jewish believers were lured to various ceremonies and systems of worship in Judaism. Today are you enticed towards similar kind of ritualistic manner of worship? Are you doubting the perfect work of Christ on the cross? Are you doubting if your salvation is incomplete without following any religious rituals or additional works?
It is well explained in our text today that the Law could never make one perfect before God. God’s way is through His Son’s own offering: “For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified,”(Heb.10:14). And Paul stated in Romans 10:3: ”For Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” Dear friend, put your complete faith in the Lord Jesus who is able to save you completely! In Him is your Salvation and the hope of eternity! Now then run your Christian race with endurance looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of faith! (Heb.12:2)
Trust in: “…Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy…” (Jude V.24)
