1 Timothy 2:1-15

“For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.” – 1Timothy 2: 5,6

The central truth of the Bible is proclaimed in our key verse – there is one God. In a world where plurality is accepted, the Christian faith is monotheistic in its belief in only one God. Although many believe in God, it is inevitable to have a proper knowledge of God. The Bible reveals the identity of God as the Almighty One, Creator of the Universe and at the same time the Father of every believer who accepts Jesus Christ as his/her Lord. God of the Bible does not stand at a distance from His creation but comes close with His creation – man, to the extent that He Himself became man. Matt.1:23 “… and they shall call His name Immanuel, which translated means, “God with us.” Jesus Christ, God-incarnate, came to earth living among men, became fully aware of the difficulties of life on earth and went through the agony of death, tasting the suffering and pain of human beings. So, our God, our Father in heaven is fully aware of every circumstance that we pass through.

At the same time, the Bible endorses the trinity of God, that is, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and the unity in trinity – that they are all equal. Jesus Christ while he dwelt on the earth was fully God and man. In John 10:30 Jesus declared “I and the Father are one.” Titus 2:13: “…looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ.”Jesus Christ is God and Saviour! His divinity connects Him with the divine realm while His humanity connects Him with human beings – thus Jesus Christ is the best person to become a “mediator.” Further our key verse states that Jesus is the only one mediator. There are no multiple mediators between God and man, only Jesus Christ.

Mediator means one who intervenes between two, either to make or restore peace and friendship, or form a compact, or for ratifying a covenant. The Bible says Jesus Christ is the mediator of a new covenant (Heb.12:24)

• Heb.9:15: For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that ……. Those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

• Heb.8:6: He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.

The new covenant for which Jesus is stated as the mediator is further explained in Hebrews 8:7-13, referring to God’s promise given in Jermiah 31:31-34 and Ezekiel 11:19-20. The essence of the promise of God for His people in Jeremiah is that God will put His Law in them and write it on their heart which will result in a very close relationship between God and His people. Ezekiel further explains the process— God will give His people a new heart and put a new spirit within them; He will take the heart of stone out of His people and give them a heart of flesh. When we read 2 Cor.3:3 we understand that God will write on the heart of His people, with the “Spirit of the living God.” This writing of the Holy Spirit on the hearts of people will make them into the “letter of Christ” which will be read by all men.

When we put our trust in Jesus Christ as our Saviour and Lord, He becomes our mediator of the new covenant. There is an internal process that God the Father will do by transforming our hearts and writing on that transformed heart (Heart of Flesh) so that our lives changes and become a powerful testimony being seen by the world. Are you ready for such a renewal?

Would you today invite Jesus Christ into your life?

Thought for the Day: For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them….. (2Cor.5:19 NLT)
