CONSIDER GOD’S FAITHFULNESS

Psalm 89:1-52

Sunday, 03 September 2023

“I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever; With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.” -Psalm 89:1

The Psalm begins with an attitude of praise reflecting God’s mercy and faithfulness. “Mercy” here is GOD’s unfailing love which He promised to David [2 Samuel 7:15 “But My mercy shall not depart from him…”] and His faithfulness [2 Sam.7:16 “Your throne shall be established forever.”] - which his generations would experience and finally be fulfilled in Christ Jesus who came to this world in the line of David. The Psalmist is so confident of God’s mercy and His faithfulness to His people, though we understand a difficult phase he mentions later in the Psalm. Yet he recalls God’s covenant to David as he pours his heart to God.

As believers we can tide over difficult phases in our lives when we recall God’s unfailing love and His faithfulness to us. What is the basis of such confidence in these strong virtues of God? See what 2 Timothy 2:13 says, If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.”

Now, considering the Psalm itself, let us:

· Remind ourselves of His faithfulness:

Ps.89: 8 says:Who is like you, Lord God Almighty? You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you. Endowed with strength and might which is seen in all of His creation, we understand His might that is able to save in any given situation. God’s people have seen or heard of His mighty acts on their behalf when He parted the Red Sea and took them across to the Promised Land. See Vs.13: Your arm is endowed with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.

Haven’t we experienced God’s deliverance- His hand that moved on our behalf when we cried to Him in desperation? He is the same today!

· Remember His Promises to us

Ps.89:28: says I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail. – this is God’s promise to David which the Psalmist recalls here. The previous verses point to God’s love and His sustaining David even in difficult times. Vs 21: “My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him.” From the Word, we know how the Lord fulfilled His promises to David and his descendants- even to the promise of the Messiah- Christ Jesus which is spoken of here: I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.Christ’s throne (that came through David’s line) will endure forever! As the Psalmist declared in V.14: “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.”

What do we learn here? God’s keeps His promises- even to generations! Even if it looks like those promises He made to us seem not to bud – yet our confidence is in the One who is faithful “…for He who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23)

Friend, what is the difficult phase you are going through that you are unable to look beyond the present to the horizon of God’s promises in your life? God is greater than your struggles and He is able to deliver you from the mire of life’s problems that trying to drown you. If only you would trust your life ENTIRELY into His hands and watch Him work His purposes in your life!

Be reminded today of this promise in God’s Word: For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory. (2 Corinthians 1:20 NLT)

Prayer: “LORD Almighty, may I be constantly reminded of Your great faithfulness in my life as I trust You.” Amen
