GOD is more than Able!

 Ezekiel 36:16-38

“…..Then they will know that I am the LORD.” -Ezekiel 36:38 

God is more than able! Broken lives, lost in aimless living without hope and seeing no light ahead—there is hope for you today! The living Almighty GOD can come through and restore! That’s the message in today’s reading!

The nation of Israel had been scattered, shamed by the enemy, their land laid waste, they were under oppression with no hope of return. Yet the Lord spoke through Ezekiel saying God was going to do a work of rebuilding and reviving the nation! 

The nation of Israel had broken their covenant with God and sinned against Him. They had defiled the land by their conduct and actions. In turn they had profaned God’s holy name because they were known as the LORD’s people. Hence God’s judgment came upon them in dispersing them into captivity. Yet in His mercy, the Lord reached out to restore. He explains the process of restoration:

• He would cleanse them from their impurities and idols (v.25)

• He would give them a new heart and a new spirit (v.26)

• He would remove their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh (v.26)

• He would put His Spirit in them to cause them to follow His law (v.27)

• They would live in their ancestral land and then He would be their God and they His people (v.28)

• He would prosper the produce in the land; there would be plenty and no more famine (vs.29-30)

At that time, the people would feel ashamed of their wicked ways and despise the detestable things they had done- there would be true repentance. 

All these would have been impossible in the mind of a captive Israel living in Babylon. But from history we know how the Lord brought His captive people back to their land and revived them—though some of the promises in its perfection, point to the period of the Messianic reign in the future!

What lessons do the text hold for us today?

• God’s initiative in Redemption/Restoration

As seen above, God initiated the restoration path for the nation of Israel both spiritually and physically. He would do the inner transformation within them to cause them to be clean from their sin and follow His Law. Similarly, God initiated all of the work in the plan of Redemption for humankind. He sent His Son into the world to be the sin offering -For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ (2Cor.5:21NLT). His shed blood cleanses us from all sin and even our conscience (Hebrews 9:12-14). God’s Spirit comes to take residence in all who accept Christ Jesus and makes them children of God (Rom.8:11). The Spirit of God then guides the believer in the way of God and helps him/her to follow the truths of God’s Word (John 16:13). Besides, Christ brings the believer to an abundant life in Him, causing the fruit of the Spirit to be borne in him/her (Gal.5:22-23).

• Man’s Response to God’s Work

As the Spirit of God convicts the world of sin and God’s judgment (John 16:8), and a person responds in confession of his sin and his rebellion against God (1 John 1:9) and His ways, then starts the new life inChrist and the resultant evidence of the Spirit-filled life. He provides for our life what is needed to live pleasing to Him— “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Rom.8:32)

He can mend your life, a total re-make into a new creation that will lead you to a fulfilled life in Him. Would you respond?
