Psalm 22

Sunday, 31 May 2026

But you, LORD, do not be far from me.    You are my strength; come quickly to help me. -Psalm 22:19

Psalm 22 is one of the Messianic Psalms which prophetically gives the details of the sufferings and future glory of Christ the Messiah. This Psalm reminds us that though Christ had to suffer for our sakes, God who knows all things, fulfilled every prophecy over Him and raised Him to be in power and glory [V.27].

The Psalm begins with a deep cry that rings out to God –A cry of rejection. We hear this cry in Matthew 27:46 from Jesus on the cross. Was this a hopeless cry? Did God respond? How many of us have let out a cry to God just as the Psalmist did!  What enabled the Psalmist to continue trusting God even in such dire circumstances? There are three truths about God, that emerge out, which anchor our trust in God:

1. The One who had called us out:

It is God who gave us life and called us! Let each of us have this assurance that God gave us life and placed us on earth with a specific purpose! This is our physical birth. The second time He called us out, was from the Cage of Sin. When the darkness of sin enclosed us, the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ brought us out of that bondage. Today as His called-out people what does God expect of us? 1 Peter 2:9 clearly states it: “You are the chosen ones by God….God’s instruments to do His work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night and day difference he made for you- from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.” [The MSG] Do you think this God would abandon you in your difficulty?

2. The One we are connected to:

Very often we hear how people get big jobs or meet their dreams because of their earthly connections. Here the Psalmist says how he was made to depend/ lean on to the Creator of the Universe right from his birth [V.10] Who are we connected to? Is it God or Man? When David faced Goliath, his trust was not in all the pieces of amour given to him for his protection, not in his ability to hit the target, but his trust was in the “Name of the LORD His God”! – that was his connection. Are you wondering where your help is going to come from? Listen to the Psalmist in Ps. 121:2 My help comes from God….” To receive this help the only question we need to ask ourselves is ‘Am I connected to this God?’

3. The One who carries us through life :

The Psalmist declares in verse 10 [NLV] ‘I was in Your care from birth. Since my mother gave birth to me, You have been my God.’ In Deut. 1:31 we read how God carried the nation Israel just as a father carries his son all through their wilderness journey until they reached the PromisedLand. It is this very same God who will cradle and carry us as we traverse through this earthly life till we meet Him face to face. What are we to fear when we are in His arms?

Jesus had the same confidence in His Father. He knew he would come through for Him. On the third day, His help came from above. No earthly power could hold Him down. Today He is exalted above every name and His kingdom will have no end! [Vs.27-28]

If this is our confidence- we need to never fear, because our help is near no matter what trouble we face [V.24]!

To Act on: “All you who fear the LORD, trust the LORD! He is your helper and your shield.”Psalm 115:11
