GOD’s PLAN REVEALED

Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing    without revealing his plan    to his servants the prophets. – Amos 3:7

Amos, the shepherd from Tekoa was called to be a prophet of the Lord, during the period of Israel’s apostasy. He speaks of his special call: But the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ (Amos 7:15). The themes of righteousness and justice are key in Amos (cf. Amos 5:24).

Amos was bringing the word of the Lord to Israel of how He would bring judgment on them for not doing right but hoarded for themselves by crime and violence (v.10). God had decided to punish Israel for their sin and the wrong religious practices that were far from the Lord’s terms. Now this was the warning that Amos was bringing to the people of what God would do. Hence the key verse aptly says God reveals His plan to His servants the prophets beforehand— giving them a chance to repent and turn back to God. 

It is clear to the New Testament believer that God intends us to draw lessons from Israel from the mistakes they made, being a warning for us (cf. 1Cor.10:6). The complacency of the people in Amos’ time in their prosperity and religious rituals, brought about a false sense of security that they were immune from God’s discipline. They were not the least convicted of their wrong practices and living. This can happen to believers and churches who go on with life and habitual religious practices, and everything is getting on well—they can become immune to what God reveals through His Word or speaks through His appointed servants. God sends His servants like Amos who speaks to His people to caution, to examine their lives and make meaningful changes or order their lives in God’s steps. Psalm 25:14 says, “The LORD confides in those who fear Him…”

Hence when God sends forth His word through His servants or we are convicted while reading and meditating it, it will profit us when we obey it. Jesus Himself spoke of obeying God’s word: “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” (Luke 11:28). It is in heeding and obedience that God   is pleased with us and we are blessed.

Now as we live in the end times, God has clearly spoken to us through His Son and He expects us to listen. Hebrews 1:1&2 says: “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.” The message of Christ is clear from the very start of His ministry on earth: “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15). The Good news is that Jesus will save you and me from the judgment that is coming at the end of the worldif we believe and trust Him as our Saviour! The just God of the universe has fixed a time to set things right and He will surely judge the wicked with condemnation. Those who have lived in ignorance of this fact can now heed to His word. As its written in Acts 17: 30-31: ^“In the pastGod overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.” Jesus who died to pay the penalty of our sin and resurrected that each of us can have a new life in Him, beckons you today to receive Him!

God has already revealed His plan through His Word for the end times. It is for us to take heed and act to avoid God’s eternal condemnation. Would you?

But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever,

the purposes of his heart through all generations. (Psalm 33:11)
