May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in you. – Psalm 33: 22
As most Psalms are songs of worship to the Almighty God, this Psalm too starts with praise, calling for an accompaniment with musical instruments. Sing joyfully to the LORD; make music to Him; sing to Him a new song—reminds us to come into His presence with a joyful attitude.
The Psalmist then goes on to speak of the Lord’s attributes- faithful in all He does (v.4); loves righteousness and justice (v.5); His unfailing love (v.5); His purposes that are steadfast (vs.10-11); His omniscience (vs.13-15); His watch over they that trust Him to give help (vs.18-20). The Psalmist must definitely be speaking out of his experience and thereby pinning his hope on the Lord for His future help. Hence the Psalm is one of great hope and trust in the Lord.
God’s unfailing love is mentioned repeatedly in the Psalm of which we will look into:
• The earth is full of His unfailing love (v.5)
The Psalmist describes God’s act of creation through the bidding of His word (vs.6-9) and His sustenance of them. How varied are His works formed by His wisdom and the earth is full of them! (Ps.104: 24). Besides, one can be assured of the plans of the Lord to be steadfast and the purposes of His heart that remain through generations (v.11). But he thwarts the plans of the mighty and powerful who think they can get by with their cleverness. In fact, the Psalmist reiterates that the size of the army or the strength of the horse or the warrior are not the defining moment for victory (cf. vs.16,17). The Lord has the last word!
• The eyes of the LORD…. on who hope in His unfailing love (v.18)
The Lord watches over those who reverentially fear Him and hope in His constant love! Times of danger, distress and lack (famine) can come to anyone in the world. But a child of God has the confidence of the Lord’s constant watch over his/her life and therefore His timely help. Reminding themselves of the faithful love of the Lord for His own, will help them tide over difficult days, putting hope in His deliverance. 2Chron 16:9 says: For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him…
• May Your unfailing be with us LORD… (v.22)
The Psalmist ends with a prayer for God’s unfailing love to be with him. This he says after declaring his trust in the Lord to be his help and shield, which points to the Lord’s protection over him. The Psalmist having understood that the Lord overrides the plans of peoples and nations so that His plans will prevail (vs.10,11), feels secure in the unfailing love of the Lord that will not allow the plans of the Lord for his life to be thwarted by anyone or anything. Hence his continued hope in the Lord!
God’s steadfast love for His creation is His undeterred plan of redemption that was realized through His Son, Jesus Christ—the salvation of humankind. God’s love is still reaching out to all who are willing to put their hope in His unfailing love—in accepting the gift of salvation He offers through Christ. If only you would take it by receiving Christ into your life to save you from the clutches of sin and bring you to abundant life in Christ Jesus—how wonderful it would be. Then as the Psalmist began, you too being made righteous can sing joyfully to the Lord; to sing a new song- the song of the redeemed one!
Rejoice: Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous;
it is fitting for the upright to praise Him. (Ps.33:1)
