Genesis 16:1-16

Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees me”;…. -Genesis 16:13
The GOD who sees us!—what a comforting and a discomforting word to some! He is a God who sees us in our highs and lows as well as when we run away and try to hide from Him! Hagar thought she could run away from her mistress, get away from all the negative circumstances that were trying to drown her—but God saw her in the lowest point of her life, spoke to her words of encouragement, showing her how the pieces of her broken life could be put together for a better future. He is the same God today reaching out to you!
Hagar was running way- she thought that was the best way, not to face up to the hard realities in life. She was used as a surrogate mother by a misguided Sarai to bear an offspring for Abraham. But Hagar too misbehaved to her mistress for which she was mistreated. What a chain of wrong actions and their consequences suffered! Sarah suffered the wrong action of doubting God’s planfor an heir and acting in haste; Hagar’s arrogance in despising her mistress when she came to know she was expecting, led to her misfortune! Abraham was not left out either—he had to make the hard choice of listening to his wife’s wrong decision and suffered in his own way.
Here is a slice of life’s complexities unfolded to us in this small chapter. Aren’t we sometimes in difficult circumstances where we are lost as to how to react, which way to turn or how we move forward in life? What does the Lord want to teach us from all of this?
• Secure faith in God
If Abram and Sarai had anchored their faith fully in the promise-keeping God, all this messiness could have been avoided. Times of testing of faith are times of waiting to see God come through in our adversities. When doubts assail us, we have to constantly remind ourselves: “The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.” (1Thes.5:24). Abram and Sarai learnt it the hard way but surely did and he is rightly called the Father of Faith!…Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed … (Rom.4:18)
• Seek God’s counsel
How prone we are to often follow our logic and not seek the Lord to guide us! That’s what Sarai did. Sarai looked at her aging body and her inability to conceive and thought the best way was to follow the custom of the land in giving her maid to bear a son for her. We need to watch out for all that is out in the world that can influence our decisions! Unless we seek the Lord and His Word for wise counsel, we can be pulled awy by worldly advice. Prov.3:5&6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
• Submit to God
Hagar, the servant having suffered Sarai’s mistreatment had every reason not to listen to the angel who told her to return and submit to her mistress. But she was willing to submit to God’s word brought to her and obey it. The promises given to her were fulfilled because of her obedience. Isaiah 48:17 [NIV] say, “This is what the LORD says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.” How good it would be for each of us to be guided in every way by Him!
Where are we at, today? Struggling with some issue? Needing guidance? Remember the GOD who sees and knows us inside out! Let’s seek Him and His way!
PROMISE: “Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.” (2Cor.2:4)
