“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.” –Psalm 55:22[NIV]
As we read through today's Psalm, most of us can relate to it. We may have passed through this valley of sorrow after being deceived by a trustworthy friend or family. Here the Psalmist, David has been deceived by his closest ally Ahithophel when he helped Absalom to rise up against his own father. David is in deep sorrow when he came to know the persons behind the uprising. A similar situation is seen in the life of our Lord, when he was betrayed by Judas, His disciple.
This is a very tough terrain to be crossed in the life of any believer. As we pass through this fearful treacherous valley, we wonder and look up to ask, many questions to our dear Lord. As we read in the case of David, he had to flee from Jerusalem, where he was king. Now he was running for his life, and nobody seemed to be trustworthy to confide in. A total chaotic situation— confusion and conspiracy happening in every quarter. No safe passage to be seen in the midst of all the confusion. But for a true believer, there is hope. Even when all fail, there is ONE to look up to, who will never fail. He will never forsake us if we put our trust in Him alone.
To walk in faith during these times of troubles, we need to cast all our cares upon Him who will sustain us. We are unable to carry this heavy burden ourselves; unable to walk under it, so as the Psalmist suggests here, we need to cast our cares on Him, who will take care of our burden. As soon as we trust Him and hand over our cares to Him through prayer, we will be relieved. Hence we will be able to walk free again!
This is a phase in our life where we learn the hard way to put our trust only in the Lord Jesus and no one else. He will make us adhere to Him alone through these experiences. It is a hard lesson to be learnt in the life of a believer. Many of us can relate to this kind of hard experiences in life— when all the things around us fall apart, and we come to a point where we don’t have anyone to trust at all. Every ground we stand on seems to be shifting sand. The only solid rock is our Lord Jesus. He will reach out and pull us to safety. As Apostle Peter puts it rightly in 1Peter 5:7: "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you."
So today if you are troubled, the Lord says, cast all your anxiety upon Him. He will not let you fall. He will take away the burdens on Himself and let you walk free of your burden. Psalm 34:23-24 [NLT] says: “The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the LORD holds them by the hand.”
Remember His beckoning in Matthew 11:28[NLT]: Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, we put our trust in You in times of trouble. Release us from the heavy burdens so as to walk in faith to glorify Your name. Amen
