Job 7:1-21

“Therefore I will not restrain my mouth;
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit,….” – Job 7:11[NASB]
God’s sovereignty and man’s frailty are reflected in the Book of Job. It was a tough call for Job during the time of his testing—the physical, emotional and mental suffering he went through was immense. Yet we see him hold on to God and came through victoriously through his endurance.
We see a raw expression of Job’s suffering, the laying bare of his heart before God in our text today. There are many expressions he uses which mirror the brevity of life-he compares his life to a hired man with allotted time, his days swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, his life as short as a breath, a passing cloud, etc. All of it shows how short a man’s life is on the earth.
Man in the heyday of his life most often is filled with pride that he forgets the brevity of life. He runs after the glitter and glamour of life—fleeting pursuits that leave him empty and wanting for more! The author of Ecclesiastes puts it in right perspective: I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind. (Eccl.1:4). All our earthly pursuits will be like chasing after the wind if our life is without God and His purpose.
While Job was a God-fearing man and had a sterling character, that did not hold back the trials he had to put up with, for a time. Yet the intensity of the adversity was dampening his spirits that he needed to vent out his distress. Thus we find him opening his emotions before God. He was honest with what he was passing through- was the Lord scrutinizing his life as though Job became the target? (Vs.17-20). It was like saying: What have I done to You that I deserve this? But we know that despite all that Job suffered, he never let go of his trust in the Lord Almighty. He clung to Him no matter how tough the days were. We note his words of hope in
“As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives,
And at the last He will take His stand on the earth.” (Job 19:25)
His unending trust in God His Redeemer held him through his trials and after the period of suffering ended, we see how God rewarded Job for his unflinching faith in the Almighty.
In the fallen world we live in, troubles are part and parcel of life—no person escapes them. Some are a direct consequence of sin; others a period of testing that God allows. James in his epistle, makes a differentiation between the trials that come to men who are tempted by evil desires and fall prey to them; others whose faith are tested to prove them. Job’s suffering falls under the second category.
James 1:2-4 is worth meditating on while a child of God goes through times of testing: “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” God allows certain tests/trials in the life of a believer to teach him/her to lean on to Him and no other. Such times of testing prove our Christian character of perseverance and endurance. That’s the victory a believer in Christ Jesus has in the hard spots of life!
Whatever you may be going through this season of life, would you cling on to the Lord? Can you too be confident that the Lord will never leave you nor forsake you? He is your Helper! (Ref Heb. 13:5-6).
Hear my cry, O God;
Give heed to my prayer.
From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. (Psalm 61:1-2)
