The great trumpet will sound, and he will send out his angels to the four corners of the earth, and they will gather his chosen people from one end of the world to the other. – Matthew 24:31
The Second Coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is the subject of our reading today. As seen in the key verse, at His coming He will gather His elect from the four corners of the earth- those who have faithfully waited for His return. As children of the Most High, we who are His, are the first privileged to be drawn away from the earth before He executes His judgment against the wickedness of men in the world, at large.
In speaking about His return a second time, Jesus drives home the point of watchfulness with an illustration of a house owner who does not know when the thief would break into his house and therefore needs to be always alert. Vs. 42 says, “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.” A believer too should live in this world with this kind of alertness so he will be always prepared to receive His Master. In being watchful, the believer can pay attention to 3 areas:
• Be watchful by standing firm in the faith (1Cor.16:13)
• Be watchful in devoted prayer and being thankful (Col.4:2)
• Be watchful of your enemy who is prowling about to devour you, so be sober minded. (1 Peter 5:8)
It is easy to be pulled away by winds of false doctrine that are out in the world. Time spent in devoted prayer and reading of God’s Word helps us build a wall against the enemy who tries to gain access into our lives if we aren’t careful.
From Vs.45 on, the illustration of the faithful and wicked servant points to how the Lord expects us to be faithful stewards of the work assigned to each believer. If found faithful, he would be duly rewarded; if found callous and acting wickedly, he would be thrown out. We must keep in mind that we are doing His work; we have to align our thinking/planning to what He intends to do through us. We should work while it is day for the night come when no one works.
How can we remain serving faithfully until Jesus returns?
We must always remember that:
• We render service, as to the Lord, and not to men. (Eph. 6:7)
• We are not to lag in diligence, being fervent in spirit when serving the Lord (Rom. 12:11)
• We are not love the world or the things in the world. If we love the world, the love of the Father is not in us. (1 John 2:15)
Let us not be weary in getting on with the task of the Master, for in due time we shall surely receive the reward for our labors.
As sojourners upon the face of the earth, it is no secret that Christ our Lord and Master cares for us even while we are in this wicked and perverse world. In His word He promised never to leave us nor forsake us(Heb.13:5). As a Father, the Lord wants each of His children to rest assured in the midst of all the ground realities on earth, there is hope for His chosen ones. Thus we are to wait expectantly for His return as He promised in His Word; for Jesus said: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” (V.35)
Our Hope: JESUS is coming soon!
