“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time.” 1Peter 5:6
Apostle Peter wrote the epistle to strengthen the believers who were passing through intense persecution during the reign of Emperor Nero, who unleashed widespread atrocities against Christians. In the middle of great trouble, Peter encourages the believers to live their lives without wavering in their faith and hope and without harboring bitterness!
Peter encourages the believers to humble themselves under the mighty hands of the Lord so that He can exalt them at the right time. Similar situations may be faced by many who read this message today and many thousands around the globe! This message is to encourage you to build your confidence that has great reward (Hebrews 10:35).
Those who humble themselves under the authority of the Lord will receive an exaltation. There is no short cut to it. It is very difficult to submit to what God says when somebody is accusing you. When you know that what is done against you is not right and the person who has done such a thing is still freely walking around, it is very difficult to forgive!! Even more difficult is to wait for God’s time. Even strong believers who know that the Lord is their strong defense and that the Lord will fight their battles and that taking revenge is not what God expects of them, find it very difficult to wait until God intervenes in the situation!!
Here the atrocities the believers were facing were enough for them to be angry towards their persecutors and they can feel justified in their mind. But the Bible teaches all believers to focus on Jesus who is their role model – He imparts strength to them: “and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously.” 1 Pet.2:23
We need to wait for God’s time in every situation in our life. “He will exalt you at the proper time.” The Greek word for time used in this place is “KAIROS”. It is different from the word used for time on a watch – which is a succession of moments – “CHRONOS”. The word KAIROS means opportune time - the time that God chooses to do things in His own way!
A perfect example of ‘KAIROS’ time, is seen in the book of Esther. In Esther 6:1 it says: “During that night the king could not sleep so he gave an order to bring the book of records….” Then in the next verse we read “ It was found written what Mordecai had reported…”. King Ahasuerus already issued a decree to kill all the Jews in his kingdom. The Jews were in fear and sorrow. As the story unfolds, they were fasting and praying for three days. And during that time something happened! God started working in the heart of the King. He lost sleep and the books were ordered to be brought and read. As he opened the book, is it not a miracle that he exactly came to the page where he found written how Mordecai saved the king’s life? And the King honored Mordecai by making him the top man in his kingdom! From that point onwards the victory for the Jews started.
The time that God woke up King Ahasuerus which was the beginning of the great victory for God’s children – that was the KAIROS time!!
May God give you the strength to wait for Him, in the middle of all your difficult times, so that in God’s opportune time (KAIROS) He may find you fit for that divine exaltation!
Think on: “… those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles…” Isaiah 40:31
