When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”- Luke 7:13
Jesus encountered many people who were desperately in need of His help. Today we come across two such people who were in a dire situation where no one could help them, except the Lord. In both instances, quick intervention was needed in the lives of their loved ones. And here is Jesus, in the face of their difficulty, to turn their mourning into joy!
Our text introduces us to the two who received Jesus’ help:
• The Worthy Centurion
The Centurion was a man in command of 100 men in the Roman army, probably Gentile by birth. Yet we see him worthy and deserving by his love towards his servant, his humility in his approach towards the Lord Jesus and his faith in God. The centurion believed in the Living God and honoured His people and their belief- he even built a synagogue for them. Now this centurion was in need of the Lord’s help- his dear servant fell sick and was about to die. Jesus honoured the centurion’s faith and healed his servant.
• The Helpless Widow
In the other incident, we see in the woman, a desperate mother and a helpless widow. Her only son had died- maybe the only source of her livelihood. There was now no one to depend on. Her future looked bleak! All she could hope for, was someone to show compassion on her. Now in the face of her desperation, here is Jesus who reached out in compassion to her and raised her son back to life!
At some point or other in life, many are at crossroads not knowing where to turn to for help, feeling desperate and alone—- but remember the One who said: “lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matt. 28:20) –the Lord Jesus is always present to help! Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Remember He is the Creator who knows everything about us and what we go through. His compassion reached out to the widow in her sorrow and restored what she had lost.
The Centurion came to know Jesus and admired His power. In his words: “But say the word, and my servant will be healed.” (V.7)— we see the expression of his faith in Jesus’ authority. He believed that a word from Jesus carried His authority and it would be done! Jesus commended his faith: “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” (V.9). This Gentile showed greater faith in Him than many of His own people. Jesus spoke in Matthew 8:11 “And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.” Its true faith in Jesus that will confirm a place in heaven—not a privileged position.
In as much as Jesus will meet you at your point of need, today He tells you: "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” (John 11:25-26) Do you believe this?" His offer of eternal life is open to all who will come to Him and put their faith in Him!
Prayer: LORD Jesus thank You for the assurance that You are always there for me in my time of need. Amen
