LIFE LESSONS IN THE WILDERNESS

Deuteronomy 8:1-20

And you shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.Deuteronomy 8:2

Hard lessons in life are learned slowly. It took 40 years for God’s people to learn this great lesson, that ........He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.(Vs.3) We try to define life with our own limited understanding and fail utterly in doing that. This grave mistake takes a great toll on the life of many. They wander and waste life with the limited understanding and live for the mortal realities surrounding us. But God is ever calling our attention to the greater spectrum of things through nature and through the circumstances in our lives. Many take things lightly and often miss the life’s end goal that is eternity.

Only God can bring us to this great understanding of our life. He is the only truth that we can trust and believe in. The book of Ecclesiastes declares to the whole humanity the folly, the vanity of this world we live in. Food or riches in itself is not sin but due to our fallen nature we tend to live our precious lives seeking after this vanity. In God's perspective this is foolishness. So God is trying in every way possible to bring us back to the original plan to live and reign with Him in eternity. God's plan from eternity to eternity is only one: Genesis 1:26-28: Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."

Why are we humans straying away from true wisdom?

1. We are so self centered due to the fallen nature and hence we try and seek after that which is pleasing to us. This temptation of the immediate physical realities takes our eyes off from the unseen and real truth behind the horizon of this perilous world. Rom.7:14: For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.

2. The second reason is that, our flesh is in enmity with God. Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. Seeking to be away from God and godly purposes in life. This brings in a lot of murmuring in our life. Just as the Israelites, we in this wilderness journey tend to study our lessons very late. We are always tempted to wander away from the central truth that we cannot live a fulfilling life without the eternal life flowing into us through the sure portion- that is Jesus Christ (of which Manna in the wilderness was a shadowy expression).

Wisdom from Above: Col 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
