Acts 11:1-30

Some of them, however, ……began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. -Acts 11:20-21
The Gospel was going forth in the power of the Holy Spirit, touching and transforming lives—but initially only to the natives (Jews). The Good News is for all- hence God’s plan for it to reach a wider circle of non-Jews slowly began to unfold as persecution erupted in places it all began.
Peter experienced a major shake-up in his perception as God spoke to him in a vision about acceptance of Gentiles into the family of God. He obeyed the voice of God as he went to the house of Cornelius, a centurion and shared the Gospel with a crowd whose hearts God had prepared to listen. If there lingered a fragment of doubt in the heart of Peter about God’s acceptance of the “uncircumcised,” it was totally swept off when the Holy Spirt came upon them and they began to speak in tongues (Acts 10:45-46; Acts 11:15). The wall of prejudices fell- the gap between the Jew and Gentile was bridged- the power of the Gospel penetrated all such wallsas people believed the good news! For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.(Rom.1:16)
The next section from Vs 19-30 of our reading brings to our attention the momentum picked up in the spread of the Gospel. The scattered persecuted preached wherever they went! If Peter’s name got mention by Dr Luke in these accounts, here were some “unknown” believers, “men from Cyprus and Cyrene” (v.20) who became bearers of the Good News to many more Gentiles. Their names have been unknown to Luke but heaven has a record of those “insignificant,”ordinary men who made an impact with carrying the Gospel to the Gentiles!
But we see Luke write: The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. (V.21). Brothers and sisters- the Lord has a way to do His work- the ordinary, to whom the world gives no “titles” or recognition are most often the ones the Lord takes in His hands to accomplish His tasks. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong (1Cor.1:27). Hence none can boast before Him! These ordinary believers went about sharing the good news in a simple way, but the Lord’s hand worked alongside them to bring big impact pointing many Gentiles to the Lord.
Today the Lord is calling us to be the link in the chain of many who are ordinary carriers of the Gospel- there may be many prominent preachers or missionaries or organizations reaching people world-wide with the Gospel. But that doesn’t diminish the role each of us has in the Lord’s work. Your sphere of influence is your nearest mission field! It may be in the home- impacting lives through your prayer to reach to the many unsaved, God puts burden in your heart for; it may be a colleague(s) at your workplace who needs a kind gesture that often leads them to make the connection with the gospel; others may be called to the highways and by-lanes and “call them to come in” to the Great Banquet (Refer Luke 14:15-24). God’s house needs to be full! The invitation needs to go out!
As you meditate God’s Word today, can we identify our mission field? Shall we give ourselves to the Great Call of the Mission to the Unreached—"Lord, use me in some way to reach- maybe one or many- that they may believe in the Lord Jesus and be saved.”
Think on: God uses ordinary people for His extraordinary purposes. ~ Anon
