“Two are better than one…”    -Ecclesiastes 4:9

The book of Ecclesiastes has fascinated many people and has great relevance in our materialistic world as it helps us see the vanity of many of our earthly pursuits. Besides it exhorts us to live with spiritual priorities and godly values having eternal significance.

Solomon in his search for the purpose of life under the sun has recorded several observations which is one of the portions in our reading today. He speaks of the futility of excessive hard work, the miserable state of one who is single and the vanity in popularity. In Vs.9-12, he advises that one must learn to value relationships over possessions, one must value people more than things! And Solomon makes this point in a simple and direct statement: “Two are better than one…” and Solomon gives four reasons for it.

V9 – there is good reward for their combined work

It is better to work smarter than harder which means that we can accomplish more when we work together with others. If all the members of the body of Christ join hands together to do the will of God we can accomplishgreater things and be rewarded in God’s Kingdom. His kingdom work will prosper when our hands are put together to work!

V10 – if one falls, the other will lift him up

We all are prone to fall- maybe several times, along life’s journey. There may be failures, mistakes, errors or sin in life, from which we cannot recover on our own. So we should cultivate good and lasting friendships while we can, so that they will lift us up when we have fallen down. Make sure that you are walking with people who you can trust because nobody is exempt from failures in life!

V11 – if two lie down together, they will keep warm

Life sometimes leaves us in “cold situations” that can cause a kind of “freezing” in our lives!- things can come to a standstill! There may be times of fear, suffering, rejection, depression, loneliness in life that we are unable to handle on our own. We may even isolate ourselves such that no one may know our real problems. But a true friend will sense our needs and give us all the encouragement, support and generosity to keep us warm when life leaves us in cold.

V12 – though one may be overpowered by other, two can withstand him

In our Christian walk on this earth, there may be battles we need to fight, our faith may be attacked. In order to withstand such spiritual fights we need the support/prayer of a friend so that we can withstand the enemy.

If you have such a friend/friends its great- but earthly friends have their limitations. Proverbs 18:24 speaks of aFRIEND who sticks closer than a brother! Let me invite you to let Christ Jesus be your Best Friend because- He loved you even when you were a sinner (Romans 5:8) and gave His very life to save you! He will lift you up in due time! He will never leave you or forsake you! He knows you better than anybody else! He is victorious over everything and so that no one can overpower you!  Many have known Jesus as their Lord, Savior and King but rarely do people think of Jesus as their close friend. Once we grasp the kind of Companion He is, we’ll realize that a truly joyful life is possible only through close friendship with Him!

Dear brothers & sisters, there cannot be a better or greater friend than the lowly Jesus, no not one! Would you make Him your friend?

‘Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.’ (John 15:13)

Now that is true friendship!
