Our Help: in the Name of the LORD

Psalms 124&125

Our help is in the name of the LORD,

the Maker of heaven and earth." -Psalm 124:8

Psalms 124 & 125 convey God’s timely help and His protection to His people. God’s deliverance is experienced in a circumstance where no human help could be possible, and the glory goes to God alone! Psalm 124:1, opens thus, “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side…” which tells us that had it not been for the LORD’s timely deliverance, it would have been a miserable situation.

The Lord our God who name is Jealous and is a jealous God (Exodus 34:14), wants His people to serve and worship him wholeheartedly in respect and honor to His name above all that exists in heaven and on earth. When David was confronted with Goliath, he boldly mentioned the authenticity and power in the name of the LORD. He said; "You are coming against me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the Israelite armies, which you have defied.” (1Samuel 17:45). David was confident of victory because he held fast to the name of the Almighty who could deliver him from the hands of the giant.

The Psalmist knew this very well when he wrote under the inspiration of the Lord in Psalm 23:3: “He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.” The Lord’s presence and protection in our lives is beyond measure. Because we carry His name as His children, angels are charged with responsibilities 24/7, day and night to see to it that the Lord’s authority is carried out to the fullest of the Father’s desire. Our feelings of disappointment, insecurity, has nothing to do with the Lord’s determination to honor and bless those who uphold the authority of His name. He is always present by our side and determined to honor His name for the sake of His children in answering our prayers even when we do not mention it to Him sometimes. He meets us at our point of dire need!

The Lord is very conscious of the authority of His name and His relationship with His people. Because of this it is only those who trust in the Lord that will be like Mount Zion, which cannot be removed but abides forever (Psalm 125:1). God honors His faithful and dedicated servants so much that, He is willing to do assure them of His presence. In Exodus 33:16-19 Moses was so bold enough to speak to the Master of the universe about his feelings: “How will anyone know that you are pleased with your people and with me if you do not go with us? Your presence with us will distinguish us from any other people on earth." The LORD said to Moses, "I will do just as you have asked, because I know you very well and I am pleased with you." Then Moses requested, "Please, let me see the dazzling light of your presence." The LORD answered, "I will make all my splendor pass before you and in your presence, I will pronounce my sacred name. I am the LORD, and I show compassion and pity on those I choose.” What an assurance!

Dear child of God, if you have trusted in the Name of the LORD Almighty, He will help and deliver! He assures His ever-abiding presence surrounding us who trust in Him!

Promise: Those who trust in the LORD

Are like Mount Zion,

Which cannot be moved, but abides forever.

As the mountains surround Jerusalem,

So the LORD surrounds His people

From this time forth and forever.
