Job 9:1-35
Saturday, 14 June 2025

If only there were someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together, someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more. -Job 9:33-34
The book of Job, one of the oldest books of the Old Testament opens out showing us God’s relationship with man. We see God’s confidence in one man but we also come face to face with man’s inability in understanding the sovereign ways of God when he encounters trouble even after living a life pleasing to Him.
How often have we felt the same in the wake of trials! During these times, our cry has been just like Job’s as written in verse 33&34 – Who will speak for me so that God would remove his hand off me? (Paraphrased)
As Job looked at the greatness and glory of God he had no words to speak on his defence (Job 40:1-15). Who would dare speak to the One who created all things? Who would have the courage to challenge the Just (V.19)? There was no one! But how blessed we are today—God knowing this helplessness sent His only Son to ‘Bridge the Great Divide’
How does he do it? Remember his Name – “I AM” – What do these letters stand for?The next time you lift up your eyes to heaven for help, be confident of Who your Saviour is!
1. Our Intercessor - There are two powerful verses that should encourage every believer and remind us that we are never ever alone in our prayer life. Romans 8:34 says Jesus is ever at the right hand of God interceding for us. Whenever we are faced with condemnation, Hebrews 7:25 reminds us that “He lives to intercede.” How often have we become weary in our prayer life because of the constant words of discouragement by the enemy! Job faced it when he was condemned by his friends for all his doings. He had none to support him. But that is not our situation. We have Jesus always in God’s presence asking God to show us mercy, grace and help in times of trouble (Heb. 4:16). And so, as the verse says “He is able to save us completely.”
2. Our Advocate – While Job had no one to plead his case, today Jesus lives to be our advocate, the one who pleads with God on our behalf. 1 John 2:14 says if we sin Jesus pleads our case with the Father. This is the privilege that we receive when we put our faith in Jesus. When the enemy has many, a claim over us and the law stands against us, we are condemned to an eternity to hell. But Jesus our advocate pleads with the Father saying He has paid the price for our sins and calls us “Not Guilty.”
3. Our Mediator – The word mediator means “the one who stands in between” (Ref: Gotquestions). Sin had wrecked man’s relationship with God. Now estranged from Him, all he has to face was God’s wrath. God raised men through the Old Testament times to stand in the gap: prophets to represent God and priests to represent the people. Yet man’s way never pleased God. But in God’s perfect time, He sent his perfect Son fully human and fully God to be the perfect and only mediator between God and man (1 Tim. 2:5) bringing reconciliation between the two parties. Job did not have this privilege the believer now has. Jesus has set all things right on both sides because He fulfilled the righteous requirement of God by being the perfect sacrifice and becoming the voice of Man to God through the blood he shed that speaks a better word for us.
Do remember: Do not despair— Our Mediator ever lives to intercede for us!
