Isaiah 54:1-17

Saturday, 12 July 2025

“For the mountains shall depart

And the hills be removed,

But My kindness shall not depart from you,

Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,”

Says the LORD, who has mercy on you. – Isaiah 54:10

Isaiah records God’s messages to His people both of retribution for the sins they committed as well as restoration when His mercy reached out in loving kindness. In the previous chapter, Isaiah 53 portrays the perfect work of God’s Servant- the Messiah in pouring out His life – an offering for sin that humankind would receive redemption. This is God’s provision for all who will receive it- His covenant people too. Isaiah 54 thus starts on a note of joy- calling forth rejoicing for the outcome of the restoration they would enjoy.

For the most part, the prophecy pertains to how Israel would enjoy a restored land and fill up desolate places and dwell in safety and security from the Lord. It looks forward to its future fulfilment in Christ on His return. God promises that His Covenant of peace will never be shaken though the mountains or hills be removed, just as He promised that a flood will never destroy the earth after Noah (Vs.9-10).

What does all these hold for a believer today? Certainly we have received our redemption through Christ Jesus and restored into fellowship with our Maker by His atoning for our sin on Calvary. Therefore we have reason to sing and shout for joy for the Lord our Maker, the Lord of all he earth has called us to be His sons and daughters!

Yet while we live in “our tents” on this earth, eagerly awaiting our eternal dwelling of firm foundation (beyond compare of any on earth) there will be times when our peace may be disturbed and we may encounter certain weapons forged to unsettle us. Here are a few promises in our reading that can help us overcome:

• Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame (V.4)

At times when God’s children are put in situations that feels humiliating or distressful, one can look to the One who can help us keep our head high. Think on Christ who humbled Himself and took on the reproach of man in many ways but was ultimately exalted by God (Phil.2:5-7). Isa. 61: 7says for all the reproach you have suffered, God is able to restore a double portion!

• God’s covenant of peace shall not be shaken (V.10)

First and foremost we are reconciled to God by which we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1). It is written in Isaiah 53:5 “…the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” What a beautiful exchange the believer has got! So no matter what the circumstance he/she faces, this peace can never be taken away!

• No weapon forged against you will prevail (V.17)

There may be many “weapons” forged against you to destroy your peace at various phases of life. They can come in varied forms: infirmities, trials, unfair accusations, unjust conduct from friend or foe—the list can go on… But a child of God needs to remind himself/herself of what the Lord says here: “…it is I who have created the destroyer to wreak havoc…“ (V.16). No weapon formed against you will prevail. Romans 8:28 encourages us: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” God works it all for good!

Well, what is trying to destroy your peace today, dear friend? Remember you are established in God’s eternal covenant of peace. May His perfect peace settle deep within your heart and circumstances that you will triumph over all!

Promise: “…and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus “ (Phil.4:7)
