“My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end. “ -Psalm 119:112
The Key verse is a strong declaration from one who has indeed tasted the truth which has always placed him distinctively above others and has been a firm foundation on which he has built his life.
How did the Psalmist reach such a decision? When we read today’s portion, we see his life being touched in 3 important areas, when he decided to be devoted to God’s Word. [ Vs.97]
The first area God touched was his wisdom.
The more he meditated on God’s word, the more wise he became! In today’s world we find people running to the ends of the world to gain wisdom. No doubt one should become learned given the opportunity, but scripture has shown us that men like Daniel, Joseph and Solomon stood out in their generation as men of great wisdom all because of their obedience to God’s word. Today as you read/listen to this you may be a student or a working individual—looking at the people around you, may sometimes make you feel insignificant. Don’t lose heart, seek God and meditate on His word daily and soon you will see that he would make you stand far superior to the others.
The second area that the psalmist was touched through his meditation of God’s word was,his ability to choose the right from the wrong.
Lets look at Psalm 119 vs. 9 & 11— “How can a young man [woman also included] keep his way pure. By living according to your word.” V.11: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” In this depraved world, how can we make the right choices? God’s Word that is deposited in our hearts is the navigator. It will help us leave the evil path that leads to death, [ Vs. 101, 104] and this message will be a lamp and a light to show us the way ahead in this dark world , so we won’t stumble as we walk till we reach our destination. [Vs.105]
The last area the psalmist experiences the touch of God is, his very life.
‘I have suffered much; preserve my life O Lord, according to your word, [Vs. 107]. We are living in a world of great suffering and despair. As one man of God has rightly said “We are either in a problem, or getting out of one or getting into one,” How do we face life’s struggles? How can we have hope in a hopeless, painful, broken world? It’s only when we put our trust in the promises that God has spoken into our lives through His Word. What He has promised, He is faithful to keep it and this word will preserve our lives till we see him face to face. As Numbers 23:19 says, “God is no man to lie nor the son of man to change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfil?”
Is there a mountain-like problem before you today that you feel is going to crush you? Hold on to the promises He has given you—He will never fail you. His word will preserve you and bring you out of your situation triumphantly.
May we renew our commitment to following God and His word until our last breath and let us join the psalmist in declaring that ‘My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.”
Quote of the day: “God’s word is pure and sure, in spite of the devil, in spite of your fear, in spite of everything." – R. A. Torrey
