Jeremiah 6:1-30

Tuesday, 03 March 2026

This is what the LORD says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;    ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it,    and you will find rest for your souls…..” – Jeremiah 6:16

Jeremiah’s persistent pleas to his people to turn from their sin to the Almighty God echoes throughout the book. He understood his great responsibility as a prophet, called to warn his people of God’s impending judgment if they would not repent and turn to Him. Forewarnings were given time and again to the nation but we see a callous attitude from them in ignoring the words of the Lord sent through Jeremiah. It isn’t much different today, is it?—people continue to ignore God’s ministers who come with messages of repentance and turning to the Lord.

The key verse today exhorts one who is at the crossroads to ask for the good way and to walk in it. That implies the deviations that the people had taken to go the wrong way.

The Deviations from the Lord and His way, seen in our text today:

• Wicked Ways (v.7)

Jeremiah spoke of the wickedness the nation had fallen into. Corrupt ways of being greedy for gain, deceit by prophets and priests (v.13), spreading slander (v.28) are some practices mentioned. Their wickedness had resulted from their rejection of the covenant law God had given them and not paying attention to His words (v.19). It is evident that when one who deviates from God’s Word, it is easy to fall prey to the ways of the world.  Conviction of sin is lost as the heart becomes hard and various sins make strongholds in the lives of people. The Lord spoke through Jeremiah in Jer.17:9-10:

“The heart is deceitful above all things

   and beyond cure.

   Who can understand it?

“I the LORD search the heart

   and examine the mind,

to reward each person according to their conduct,

according to what their deeds deserve.

How pathetic our condition if we do not repent and seek the Lord to give us a clean heart!

• Unwilling to listen (v.10,17,19)

Jeremiah laments the unwillingness of people to listen to what he was telling them. The sound of the trumpet in v.17 is synonymous with warning—when it is sounded, people need to heed and take necessary action. But the people of Israel refused to regard the prophet’s warnings. It was clear what was expected of them according to the words spoken by the Lord in their covenant law; but they rejected it (v.19). There was this rebellion against the Lord in failing to listen to what He was speaking to them. Stephen spoke about the likes of them as stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, …resisting the Holy Spirit… (Acts 7:51). God speaks through the Psalmist in Psalm 50:17 to the wicked: “For you yourself hate discipline, And you throw My words behind you.”

Having identified the problem, the solution is to come back to the “ancient paths”—the mannertheir patriarchs walked in the way of the Lord. That’s the good way of being instructed by the Lord and to walk as guided by His Word. Psalm 119:105 says: Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” In doing so, there is rest for your soul, Jeremiah says.

Christ Jesus speaks to us in Matt.11:29: Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Being yoked with Him, allowing Him to be your Master, you can learn from Him His ways. He was gentle and humble in heart, obeying the will of His Father and hence accomplished all of God’s purpose for Him. Today, if you have been restless and wandered away from the path of the Lord, He beckons you to return to His good way and yield yourself to Christ so that you will find rest for your soul in Him!

Jesus says: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”(Matt.11:28)
