“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.” - John 6:37
There are different types of seekers in the world— some seek the pleasures of life and what the world has to offer them while others seek ways to fill an emptiness or longing in their souls. In their quest, many go after spiritual gurus, philosophical thinkers or glamorous personalities. In our reading today we see people seeking Jesus – was it for the right reasons? Let us see!
The feeding of the five thousand by multiplying the five loaves and two fish was an astonishing miracle for the crowd who had gathered around Jesus. Soon after He left that place, some people came seeking where He went- the reason as Jesus explained, “… I say to you, you seek Me not because you saw the signs but because you ate of the loaves and you were filled” (John 6:26). The wrong reason!
From our reading, here are the Right Reasons for seeking to earnestly follow Jesus:
1. Jesus is the Saviour of the world:
Jesus says in v.29: “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” Why did God send His Son into the world? John 3:17 is clear: “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” The name ‘Jesus’ means “he will save His people from their sins” (Matt.1:21). There is salvation in His name, for there is no other name given by which men can be saved (Acts 4:12). Therefore, if you are still not saved, receive Jesus as your Saviour!
2. Jesus is our Sufficient Portion:
Jesus guarantees us, “I am the Bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” (vs.35). We can never be fully satisfied by the perishing bread of the world and Jesus tells us not to be worried about what we eat or drink: “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’…For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt.6:31-33). Jesus is sufficient for our every need!
3. Jesus is our Security
Jesus promises us: “…the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.” (v.37). Many feel rejected and alone in life. Even if the whole world forsakes us, we can come to the One who said, “I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” (Heb.13:5). He is the Good Shepherd who knows each of His sheep by name and keeps them securely in His fold (John 10:11;27;28)
4. Jesus is our Surety
Jesus assures us that everyone “who believes in Him may have everlasting life and I will raise him up at the last day.” (v.40). Just as He was raised from death, every believer will be resurrected on the day of His return. See how again in John 11:25 Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” That’s eternal life in Him. What a future hope and surety for everyone who puts his/her faith in Jesus Christ!
Friend, if you are seeking after the temporal or the things that are here today and gone tomorrow or if you are seeking to find what can fill that emptiness in your soul- why don’t you seek Christ Jesus? You can find rest for your souls only in Him (Matt.11:29).
