SET THE LORD BEFORE YOU!

Psalm 16

Sunday, 24 April 2022

I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.” -Psalm 16:8

Psalm 16 records one of David’s most intimate thoughts about the Almighty God. He begins with a declaration that the Almighty is in control of his life and seeks Him for safety. King David was no ordinary man who faced ordinary struggles. Though being ‘a man after God’s own heart’, he experienced various trials, difficult circumstances, wars and more. Yet in everything, David held on to what was most important – his relationship with Almighty God!

In the midst of all adversities, David knew and believed that God loved him which helped him to keep going. We too pass through similar situations in life— everyday trials and difficulties of life seem to just pull us down- but every time we keep God as our priority, He will deliver us. Sometimes the difficult situation and circumstances may still be there- but we must declare like David, that the LORD is the portion of my inheritance!

Our relationship with the Almighty God is what keeps us joyful in the midst of sorrow, and gives us peace when confusion arises. There is nothing more precious than having an intimate relationship with God. Regardless of how difficult the situation, remember that the Almighty God has a purpose and plan, far exceeding anything of the world. When we stand firm, God gives us the power to overcome! During difficult times, children of God must take a stand that nothing is worth breaking our covenant with Almighty God.

Dear friend, if you have never been in an intimate relationship with God, let me point to you two simple steps which will lead you to a never-ending relationship with Him:

Knowing Him

Though God had created man in His image and established an amazing relationship with him, SIN entered man which got him separated from a Holy God. “…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” (Romans 3:23). Sin entered every person which deserved God’s judgment- death! But since God loved man with an everlasting love, God the Father, sent His only Son- Christ Jesus to take on man’s judgment for sin so that sin could be appeased. The sinless Son of God died in the place of sinful man so that he who believes and accepts Christ’s death on the cross for his pardon is set right with God! John 3:16 says, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Anyone who takes this free offer of salvation by confessing his sin [“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” (1 John 1:9 NLT)] and accepting Christ Jesus into his life, is set right with God! An intimate relationship with Him is established and from then on he is set on “the path of life” (Vs.11)!

Abiding in Him

Once a person establishes a relationship with God, he has to abide in Him continually. Jesus says in John 15:4: Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” Daily prayer and meditation of God’s Word so that it becomes a part of one’s life, helps abiding in Him. Jesus said in John 8:31: “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. A life-time of abiding in His presence gives us “fullness of joy!”(Vs.11)

Friend, may you know Christ and abide in Him all the days of your life!

A prayer based on Psalm 16:11 [NLT]: “LORD Almighty I pray “You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.” Amen
