STAY ON GOD’S PROMISE

Psalm 119:33-64

Sunday, 28 May 2023

“Remember your promise to me; it is my only hope. Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles.” -Psalm 119:49,50

Psalm 119 is all about God’s Word and the lengthiest chapter in the Bible! God’s Word is foundational for everyone who has committed his/her life to the Lord and wishes to follow Him. And in the journey of life in this dark world, His Word is light that guides and leads: “Your word is a lamp before my feet and a light for my journey.” [Ps.119:105 CEB]

The road of life is not always a smooth easy ride, there are bumps, twists and turns, uncharted territory, varied pathways -some downhill, some uphill. So it’s not easy to stay on track! But a Christian whose life is founded, centered on God’s Word can stay on track no matter the tough ride! And one of the aspects of the Word that helps us all through is the Promises of God in His Word!

The key verse defines what the Promise of God does for a believer- let’s personalize it as did the Psalmist:

· It is my hope: The greatest promise that God made and fulfilled was the sending of His Son as the Saviour of mankind- as declared from the very first book of the Bible till its fulfilment as recorded in the gospels. Jesus which literally means Saviour came to the world, so we could be saved from our sins and have a relationship with God through Him! This is the greatest hope for all mankind! Those who have experienced salvation knows the transformed life in Jesus!

Besides, there are many promises in His Word for every situation in life that one can receive, and they provide hope to the believer!2 Corinthians 1:20 says, “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him [Jesus] Amen, to the glory of God through us.”

· It revives me: There are times when one becomes discouraged and downcast because of various reasons; in such seasons, it is God’s Word that sustains a weary soul! God’s Word is alive and active (Heb.4:12) and can work within us to revive us when we are cast down. Vs 92&93 of the same Psalm says, “Unless Your law had been my delight, I would then have perished in my affliction. I will never forget Your precepts, For by them You have given me life.” Yes God’s promise of healing, restoration and renewal goes a long way to revive a weary soul!

· It comforts me: God’s Promises are of great comfort in distress, sorrow or pain. Many are the promises in God’s Word that brings comfort when you are at your lowest point. Psalm 23:4[NLT] says, “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.” God’s promise of His ever-abiding presence gives us great comfort in our times of loneliness or situations which feel bigger than ourselves (Matt.28:20; Joshua 1:9).

Dear brothers and sisters, God’s Word is full of promises for His children. If only we would find them in His Word and meditate on them and appropriate them in our lives, how enriched our Christian life would be! Romans 10:8 says, ‘…..“THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART”—that is, the word of faith….” It is only by faith that His promises can become yours!—that is to believe in Him and then take Him at His Word! May God give us a word in season…and may our hearts and ears be quickened to listen from Him morning by morning (Isaiah 50:4).

Point to Ponder: “Gather the riches of God’s promises. Nobody can take away from you those texts from the Bible which you have learned by heart.” ~Corrie Ten Boom
